Are repeat features coming to Savings goals?

The spending goals introduced the option to make them repeatable.  This is great as I use the same goals annually in numerous categories.  Unfortunately they are not useful for ensuring you have adequate funds available by a specified date.  For example if I set a goal of $1000 in my Holiday category for Christmas but spend $200 at Halloween out of it.  I'd only have $800 in the budget by Christmas though it will tell me I'm on track.

I'm currently using Savings goals for this but having to reestablish them every year.  If the repeat option was available I could make it a Savings goal instead and have it repeat every year.  The the more I spend in the Holiday category the more I'd have to save for Christmas to stay green and when it arrives I'll have exactly $1000 available.

With that said, is the repeat option coming to Savings goals too?

  • You should actually use the "Needed for spending" goal type for repeating spending goals like christmas. It will work how you would like it, but you may also want to consider a seperate haloween and christmas category since they are actually two different dates and amounts. Read this documentation on goal types:

    https://docs.youneedabudget.com/article/128-goals

The Savings goal is seemingly specifically for trying to reach a target balance either for a single non-repeating goal, and/or to reach and maintain a category balance, like in the case of an emergency fund.

Edit: Oh sorry I misunderstood! You're saying that the "needed for spending" goal type will not actually make sure you hit your goal amount by the date if anything gets spent from it on the way. Yes I can see what you mean that it would be useful to have a repeating Savings goal that makes sure you hit the exact mark.

  • Hi Jim D !

Currently, those repeat options are only for Spending Goals. You can let our Product Team know you'd like to see that option for Savings Goals by submitting a Feature Request. :)
