check written before YNAB

Hello, I started YNAB at the end of November.  It has been a bit of a learning experience for me! I have a question that maybe you could help me with. I wrote a check just prior to starting YNAB for $500 for a deposit on my daughter's college apartment for next year.  I never accounted for that money in my current budget, but it was reflected in YNAB as my bank and YNAB account always showed the difference.  When I categorize it in - let's say college expenses - I have a negative number in to be budgeted for January. This shouldn't be, because the money was budgeted prior to starting YNAB. I hope I explained this correctly

  • figured out the problem!  I had made a manual transaction for it, so it was listed twice.  I deleted the manual transaction and now the bank and YNAB are aligned!

Pre-YNAB plans and transactions can certainly cause some confusion as you get started, but if you keep up with reconciling from here out you should be golden!
