check written before YNAB

Hello, I started YNAB at the end of November.  It has been a bit of a learning experience for me! I have a question that maybe you could help me with. I wrote a check just prior to starting YNAB for $500 for a deposit on my daughter's college apartment for next year.  I never accounted for that money in my current budget, but it was reflected in YNAB as my bank and YNAB account always showed the difference.  When I categorize it in - let's say college expenses - I have a negative number in to be budgeted for January. This shouldn't be, because the money was budgeted prior to starting YNAB. I hope I explained this correctly

  • figured out the problem!  I had made a manual transaction for it, so it was listed twice.  I deleted the manual transaction and now the bank and YNAB are aligned!

Pre-YNAB plans and transactions can certainly cause some confusion as you get started, but if you keep up with reconciling from here out you should be golden! That said, we're always here to help if you have any other conundrums 😊Happy budgeting!
