Bulk unlock transactions

For an unknown reason, we have hundreds of transactions locked (indicating reconciled) but don't know how they were locked. These were all manually imported when we started using YNAB.

According to https://docs.youneedabudget.com/article/166-reconciling-accounts we cannot unlock any transactions. Although it never explicitly says that, and it should say that clearly and boldly.

Is there any other option? We want to correctly reconcile all our imported transactions. We do not use direct bank connections for import, but rather we used a collection of import files. We enter all transactions manually, which is the best way to find errors of our own or the bank. We've found both in the few months we've reconciled, so we're not automating this, ever.

Any help?

  • Locked transactions are those that have been reconciled already. There shouldn't be a need to unlock them if you correctly reconciled before, and they were locked at that time.

    • JoeDid please read what I posted.  I did not ask what a locked transaction means. I asked if there was a way to unlock them in bulk instead of duplicating and deleting the original (which is a horrible solution for a software system in the cloud given potential connectivity or other client issues).

This is what I read. I was only pointing out that they were already reconciled. Sorry if I offended you.

  • Hi Magenta Storm !

Sorry for the trouble! The only way to un-reconcile transactions is to use the Undo button, but that only works if you haven't refreshed the page or logged out since last reconciling.

You should be able to correctly reconcile from your last reconciliation - which only requires reconciling new transactions, not un-reconciling old transactions. If the Undo option isn't available, the only other way is to re-create the transactions as you mentioned.

If you have any other questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

dakinemaui Faness I have this same issue.  My checking account is way off and the problem is within a reconciled GROUP of transactions that I  cannot find a reconciliation action for.  this is so screwed up I need to start over but I need this data for the Year to date data for financial planning for ht rest off the yer.    I just re-signed up with YNAB the first of January, so I'm new with this version (used YNAB a few years ago, but just for the basics), I don't know what I could have done to mess this up.  I did have a good reconciliation for March, but it is very wrong now too.  Is there a way to save my data and transfer it to a new budget and start over??  I now there is something called refresh, but I'm not sure what the is either.   Thanks!!

MonetaryPlan Just reconcile to today's balance and make the adjustment transaction. Deal with that impact in the budget and move forward.

    • MonetaryPlan If the March reconciliation was correct, but is now incorrect, there had to be a change to the previous transactions. Maybe something was entered with a date prior to that reconciliation? dakinemaui is right - you'll want to reconcile to your current balance to get things back on track and make any necessary adjustments going forward.

  • The inability to unlock locked transactions is really kind of inexplicable.  I can see perhaps having a lengthy work-around, because all things considered one should never need to unlock a reconciled transaction....but the truth is, we all make mistakes - and the inability to undo this particular mistake is really kinda unacceptable.  I've been using YNAB for ~6 months and have already encountered this "oh crap" moment twice...so no more reconciling for me; i'll just leave all my "reconciled" transactions marked but unreconciled..until you guys add an unlock function.

Houston2010 In that case, I suggest you use one of the flags as a surrogate for locked status.
