iOS 15 with YNAB 4 (Classic)

Just FYI to anyone who may end up searching the forum - after installing iOS 15 (currently in beta), the YNAB Classic App (for use with the desktop YNAB 4) has some UI issues reloading/re-syncing budgets.  After deleting and re-installing the app, the issue has persisted.

When syncing a new budget or you get the 'desktop has changed we need to re-load the budget' message, after selecting a budget, it 'appears' to freeze.  However, what I believe is happening is the graphic for the sync progress is just not showing and it also doesn't auto-load the budget screen when it's done.  But I it seems to 'work' OK anyway.

If you just let it sit there for a few minutes (depending on how long you think the sync might take) and close and re-open the app, all is good.  The budget works fine.  I hope the final release of iOS 15 doesn't have this behavior... but wouldn't be surprised if it did.

  • Hi Joel,

Any change in the behavior with the release version of IOS 15?

IronChuck no change.  I have discovered that you don’t need to fully close the app though, if you just switch apps or go to the Home Screen and then back to YNAB it displays the budget.

Everything else has been working fine, budget is Ok, no corruption of data/budget or anything.

🤞🏻 I can squeeze another year out of the mobile app.

  • Thanks for the heads-up! I use the app on iOS 15 with Wi-Fi syncing and the the app works just as smoothly as before. But certainly can understand if Wi-Fi syncing isn’t for everyone. Personally I mainly use YNAB4 on my Mac anyway and my partner prefers Quicken so I’m the only one entering transactions.

  • Anyone else seeing the „YNAB Classic needs to be updated to be compatible“ message after having updated to 15.1, and not being able to run the app at all?

Do yo think the folks at YNAB would do that for us?

Gray Chef Oh no... that does not sound good.  I am on 15.0.2 still.  I will try not to update now... but my wife's phone has a policy from work that will require it be upgraded soon 😞

While YNAB has a great track record of upkeep on the old app, for example they updated the Dropbox API to v2 to keep the app alive after they already released the web app and basically weren't supporting the old version anymore.  It was a kind gesture, I think.

But at this point we're most likely beyond the threshold.  The app is no longer even in the App Store, you have to get it through the 'Previously Purchased' section (i.e. anyone who never had it cannot even get it).

I was hoping the only thing that would ever break was Dropbox syncing and I could go with WiFi syncing.  But looks like I'm back to the receipt in pocket/nightly entering routine soon.

a_different_joel I just updated my phone to 15.1 and I don’t get any messages, the app seems to work just as before. Again, I use Wi-Fi sync so maybe that is part of it.

Spring Unicorn thanks for the info!  That’s great news.  Maybe I’ll give it a go and see what happens 😬

Spring Unicorn hum, interesting — that’s giving me some hope. I came directly from iOS 14.8 to 15.1, so maybe that was a factor. Trying to reinstall the app, maybe that helps in my case.

Gray Chef …and reinstalling did the trick. Back to normal, even with Dropbox syncing. Whew :-)
