Bank Accounts Reconciled, but Available Amounts are Not Matching

Hi, I have an issue with my accounts.  All of my accounts are reconciled and so the amount on the bank balance matches YNAB and all transactions are accounted for.  However, my available amount (for May, the next month) does not match...I think I have about $1500 more in my checking account than is accounted for in YNAB and I cannot figure out what else to do.  Any tips?

  • When you sum your available amounts, are you including any (credit card or HELOC, etc.) "payments"?  Those dollars are covering negative balance amounts in your budget, so are not included in what YNAB says the sum of your accounts includes.

    • Fuzzball Meows Thanks for the response.  Do you mean like the "Credit card payments" category inside my budget?

Edit to add: even if I do, that doesn't account for it. All card payments that have already been made show up in my checking account, and the remaining balance on my CC is only like $200.

    • ChrissyLouHoo Yes. I assumed based on what you mentioned that you added up the category available amounts, and when I did that I included the credit card payments.

Do you have any money budgeted further out than May?  (Or in May?) Is there anything budgeted in a future month that could be causing the issue? Are you over-budgeted anywhere? Over-budgeting can get weird when you spend some money on a credit card in the category where you are over budget.

If none of these seem to be the case, then as Vibrant said, posting numbers here or asking YNAB support would probably be the best ways to get help at this point.

In the future-most month you can access, the math is:

Total Available (from inspector) + TBB = Sum of budget cash accounts + credit accounts with positive balances

  • @nolesrule - let me be clear - does credit account with a positive balance mean I owe on it, or I have a surplus on it? To me positive means assets and negative means debts, so I would usually consider a credit card balance negative.

ChrissyLouHoo a credit card with a positive balance is a card where you have paid more than you owe.

ChrissyLouHoo You can either post actual numbers here so folks can help troubleshoot more accurately, or you can ask YNAB support to look at your budget and explain what is happening via email if you don't want to share your budget amounts on the forum.

ChrissyLouHoo There isn't anything to fix. The formula I provided is true. When the numbers don't seem to add up, it's due to not adding up the correct numbers. The cash in accounts (which includes positive CC balances) is always equal to the cash in your budget.

  • Yes, ok.  The available balance in my most future month does add up to account balances.  I was trying to check just what I thought was in my checking account but I must have been missing something, because the totals add up

    thanks for the encouragement :)

ChrissyLouHoo If you are trying to match a specific account balance to what is in your budget, it's not going to work if you have more than one account. YNAB doesn't care how much money is in any particular account.
