Missing option to manually reassign "Ready to Assign" Money in New Mobile App

Working on getting acclimated to the new YNAB design that was just released. While the web app still offers the ability to manually move "Ready to Assign" money at the top to a specific category (a feature I use all the time because I have a "buffer" category where all new money goes until the next month), the mobile app only lets you auto-assign when you tap that number. So I now have to scroll to my "Income for Next Month" category and enter the amount there.

Any plans to get some parity here so we can still manually assign dollars on the mobile app to a specific category directly from "Ready to Assign" at the top of the app, like we can in the web app? I'd imagine that for anyone using a buffer-type system to get a month ahead, as YNAB has historically espoused, this would be super helpful.

A bit of kudos though for the web app redesign - while initially it creates an extra step of having to click over to "Manually" as opposed to "Auto" after you click "Assign", it seems to remember your choice after that, so it will now default to "Manually" for me going forward. Very smart.

You can assign money by clicking on the category. and from what I’ve heard they’re already looking at changing this...they underestimated how many people used the workflow of moving money from TBB.

WordTenor Oh, thank goodness. I was not looking forward to retraining 3+ years of muscle memory.

WordTenor I so hope this is true - as my iOS apps default to the app so i cant even use the manual assign as available on the web version when on those devices. 100% of the success of YNAB in my own life is the way it allows me to work on my phone/tablet, and the learning that comes from manually assigning funds to categories.

  • Thanks, yeah that's a good fix for now. I've pinned my "Income For Next Month" category to the top so I don't have to scroll to get to it. And encouraging to hear they're likely working on a fix.

Btw love your tagline "Can we agree that goals are dumb and immature? Sure." 😄 My wife and I are big Hamilton fans. "Well if it isn't WordTenor, sir."

Silver Guitar Ham fans forever! This forum launched right after I got my first set of tix (I’ve seen it twice now and time #3 got scuttled by COVID and hopefully will reappear soon) and so I started out with “I punched the bursar” as my tagline. I update it about every 4-6 months to a new lyric. Some nyoob once got very angry about how haughty I must be with a tagline of “And they say I’m a Francophile; at least they know I know where France is.” 😂

    • WordTenor haha that’s awesome! Look forward to seeing future iterations of it. We haven’t gotten to see the show live yet but certainly hope to one day. Can’t throw away our shot!

  • IOS: You can click "Auto Assign" then go in and change the amounts that ynab has suggested. I quite like this screen, though you do need to go through and remove some/all of ynab's suggestions which is a bit tedious. But the view of your cateories and targets is useful. (You can change your mind and cancel instead of assigning. There is no undo on IOS, so check the numbers before telling it to do it.)

You can click on a single category. There you can click on "Auto Assign", to see the last month's assign and spent, the average etc. -- clicking on any one assigns it, or just use it for the info it gives.  You can just type in to assign money; you can use the move money tool.

  • Yes - it can be done that way, and as you describe it that way is ‘tedious’ - i much prefer being blue to deal with one allocation at a time, and loved the process of manually allocating funds to each category in turn. YNAB might want to streamline and automate - but this user likes process and method and control.  Manual assign is now my default on the web version and i hope and trust that it will return to my mobile soon.
