Why are my accounts not accurate, and my to be budgeted amount wrong?!

Every time I sign into YNAB my "To Be Budgeted" Amount is different. I use the import feature. My accounts are never the correct amount, even after importing all my transactions. I constantly have to reconcile, and my "To Be Budgeted" Amount is thousands more than I actually have in my accounts combined.

I have a savings account with a few thousand dollars in it. I'm not sure if I should just unlink this. I made it so that all that money was "budgeted" towards my savings, and no longer showed up in my "To Be Budgeted" Amount. But now that keeps constantly changing, and I am so frustrated. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

  • If you have overspending in your categories then you need to cover that from your tbb as the money is spent but you haven’t budgeted for it.

have you ever budgeted to $0??

when was the last time you reconciled??

also if you have credit cards make sure they are showing a negative balance.

  • Money in TBB will sit there until you give those dollars a job -- YNAB doesn't care if you've spent them. The only "correct" TBB is $0, and it's on you to arrange that by making budget entries.

When you reconcile, are you allowing YNAB to make a reconciliation adjustment transaction? If you have to do that more than once,  it's usually because you're giving YNAB a balance that includes pending amounts.

You should expect that if an imported transaction is auto-categorized as TBB.

I don't know if it's relevant to your situation, but many users who already have the current month covered will auto-categorize as something else so TBB isn't impacted. (Income Next Month is a common choice.) They will re-categorize as TBB at the end of the month in order to budget the new/upcoming month.

dakinemaui I categorize everything according to the appropriate Bill when it posts in my account. But my account has never matched since I linked my bank. I budgeted down to $0. Then I’ll sign back in and it’ll say $1700 left to be budgeted....and I have no idea where it’s getting that number.
I am still within my budget according to what I’ve written out. YNAB just doesn’t reflect the correct numbers. I almost feel like I need to start over from scratch to figure out where this error is occurring.

Violet Ink Get your accounts to agree first. Only after that should you worry about the budget (since it depends on your account balances).

You can start completely from scratch (make a Fresh Start in YNAB), but that's way overkill in my opinion. I'd simply let the Reconciliation process make an adjustment transaction.

Also see my earlier comment about pending transactions when reconciling. You haven't described exactly what you're doing when reconciling, so it's hard for us to point to a specific cause.

dakinemaui I have no pending transactions right now. All my bills are paid. And all my dollar amounts were assigned. There is still money in my account. But it just doesn't agree with the totals for my accounts. So I'm not sure what the issue is. I have a headache from trying to figure it all out.

Again, you need to *make* it agree. It's not going to fix itself.

dakinemaui I don’t think we’re on the same page. I am aware that I need to make it agree. I have. And then I sign back in and all the numbers have changed again. I either need to start over and see if that will help me to fix my issue. Or just continue on with pen and paper.

Violet Ink almost certainly your auto imports are the source of the changes but not necessarily a problem.

If TBB is changing when auto imports happen then something is categorised as TBB and probably shouldn't be. You need to find it.

SgtBatten possibly. I may just start over without the auto imports and see if it makes a difference.

Violet Ink if you reconcile everything it's as good as starting over. I imagine so anyway.

I've always made the effort to find and correct the error. No adjustment transactions and no fresh starts in 7 years. It's tough at first so I get it. Worth figuring it out is all I'm saying. Understanding why it's going wrong is better than a fresh start blindly

Violet Ink You can never rely 100% on auto import to keep your accounts in balance.   Transactions get missed for  a variety of reasons.  People have had transactions double.  It is a convenience for sure but if you rely on it 100% you'll eventually be out of balance again.

TBB is only impacted by imports categorized as TBB. After you reconcile, all those transactions have the locked icon and can be hidden from view. After you import, they are not locked, merely cleared. IF TBB has changed, it is one of those transactions that did it.

If TBB is the wrong category, then change it. If TBB is the right category, then nothing is wrong, and you should budget TBB to $0.

      Violet Ink

Categorize most inflows as Inflow: To Be Budgeted.

The only inflows that should NOT categorized as TBB are returns, rebates, and reimbursements; those go back to the original category of the outflow.

  • You might want to look for account transfers that are not transfers in YNAB. It's possible one side is being categorized to TBB while the other is categorized to a category, rather being a single transfer.

If TBB is changing, look for anything categorized to TBB that shouldn't be.

  • I think I may have fixed it! It added a starting balance after our paychecks were cleared, which was incorrect, and made it look like we had double the amount of money in our account. I reconciled that, and all my numbers are looking accurate! Thank you everyone for your help!
