Search on the Notes field?

Is there a way to search all of the notes that I have attached to different categories?

Example: I budget for an item that will not be due for a year, like pay for an annual membership and type it into the Notes section of the proper category. It doesn't require it's own category, it is part of my Hobbies category.

Now next year when the bill comes in, I can't remember what category to pay it out of. If I could search all notes for the membership name, it would show me where it "resides".

Hope this makes sense. Thanks

  • UN4ME This totally makes sense! And as someone who keeps their categories pretty broad and heavily uses the notes section, I can 100% relate to wanting to be able to search notes. Alas, there is not currently a way to do so in YNAB. If you're up for it, though, you can submit this to our product team as a feature request.

Now, acknowledging that this would require a bit of work upfront, I do have a thought! You might consider adding scheduled transactions for these kinds of annual expenses. That way, when the date rolls around, the transaction will enter your register categorized and ready to go. Let me know what you think!

Rachel Thank you fellow Note Nerd..!!  A feature request it is. AND, thanks for the tip on scheduled transactions. I have only been here 6 weeks so still learning a lot and appreciate the link that took me straight to that info. Thanks for the help!

    • Note Nerds™ unite! 😆 Glad that the scheduled transactions tip was helpful, but let us know what other questions you run into as you get into the groove with your budget.

  • The other thing to note is that if the payee that you use is only for hte membership, YNAB will remember the last category used and will default to it.

But the best thing to do is create a scheduled transaction for anything like this. Sometimes, I will make the date for a month before it is due to make sure I have enough money in the category for it. Scheduled transactions are great for everything. When I make any kind of appointment, I will create a scheduled transaction. If I know the amount (set fees), I will enter it. Some I will estimate if I know roughly how much it should be. Some will have the amount blank if I have no idea how much it will be. But at least I know I have to account for it when I check my budget (daily...)

MadDog Impressive.  Those are some good ideas.  I'm not quite that organized, but I do heavily use and rely on scheduled transactions.  I should consider adding one for appointments that I know will have a charge.  Just one more thing to keep the budget in check.

  • I use scheduled transactions a lot too. If I want a reminder or don't know how much it will be then I leave the amount as zero.
I have also used emojis in my category titles so you could put an emoji in the heading that may give you an idea of what the category is for.
You can also add notes onto the account so if you could also put in a note against the account of the annual expenses.

Ivory Panther Hah. I just learned how to do the emojis in here and will admit to going just a little crazy with them...!! Good idea, thanks!
