I currently have Geico and did a quote on Progressive and it seems Progressive is TOO cheap. What am I missing? Thanks for helping.

  • Per Progressive my policy would be $1364 for 6 months and Geico is currently $1872 for 6 months.

I have a new driver on my policy...he's had his license more than 1 but less than 2 years. He drives our paid off car once or twice a week to go approximately 10 miles at most.

    • Stacy C If it's an option, I'd call Geico to see if they can offer you anything lower with Progressive's offer in mind. Customer retention tends to push rates a little further than online quotes when it comes to insurance.

  • It's hard to tell because the quotes are broken out differently, but it looks like Progressive has a higher Property Damage limit for both Insured and Uninsured Motorist. You also have higher deductibles with Progressive quote.

Progressive is likely that much lower because they have a significant discount for the first policy when you switch to them. It'll probably creep up a bit at renewal. We saw about a 10% increase in our second 6 months, but then it flattened out.

nolesrule Okay....I'm just trying to see why so massively different. Upping the deductibles in Geico saves $90 per 6 months, I just don't know why Progressive is so much cheaper. I hate to change from what I'm familiar with but did want to check the cost of switching.

FWIW, I ditched Progressive after dealing with them on a car-totaling accident which was subrogated (i.e. other party accepted fault) on the same day it happened. They were a BEAR to deal with, and since I was moving away from a location which had a Progressive service center, I decided not to mess with it.

I figured if it was that hard to deal with them when the other party's insurance was paying, I didn't want to wait around to see what it was like if I actually caused an accident.

  • So really weird thing just happened....Geico CALLED ME!!  And LOWERED my rate!!

They said I'd been an excellent customer for 15 years and there was a new program in MD with more discounts.  My normal monthly payment was $313. I just logged in to my Geico account and starting in February my payments are $177!!!!....LIKE WTF?????

I'm super skeptical, but its there in black and white on the web portal.

I'm so happily confused. Do you think they can tell I was shopping for quotes?
