Split transaction auto-distribution

Entering a split transaction on my phone where each individual category entry doesn't add up to the total will give a prompt asking if I want to auto-distribute the remainder.  This is super useful for splitting negligible amounts of tax from a total order between multiple categories on an itemized receipt.

The web version just yells at me and calls me stupid.  Then I wallow in depression and drink to forget.

  • Don't wallow, ffff ! We're here to help!

As a former YNAB 4 customer myself I hear you on this one. Have you read through our Transition Guide? While it's a bit broader about changes made between YNAB 4 and the new YNAB, it helped me adjust to these types of differences in my own experience.

I hope it's helpful... then you can drink to celebrate your budgeting prowess instead! 馃槈

Yup, I've read and have been doing fine in using the product post-transition.  It's just a big inconsistency between web and mobile platforms' methodology in entering transactions, and I don't like products I pay for to call me stupid.  Usually.  Sometimes that's what I'm paying them for in the first place.

  • Hey  ffff , I'm going to send that suggestion to our design team so we can consider if we'd like to bring that feature from YNAB 4 to the new YNAB! Thanks for reporting your frustrations with it... because you may have just voiced what others might be already thinking! :)

I'm going to move this over to our App Functions category so you can get better traction and conversation there! Thanks!!

    • Dan thanks for addressing this particular shortcoming.  I also find it tedious to have to cut and paste the remainder into my splits, an automatic population would be a vast improvement to my user experiencing!

  • How come auto-distribute is available on the app while it's not on the web version? Shouldn't both UI have the same functionalities?

      Hi @Blue Drill !

That's the goal, of course, and we'll never be finished improving the functionality of both the mobile and the web app. 馃槉

Would you mind submitting your idea via the Feature Request Form? From there it's collected in a database, and just about every day, our Design Team combs through and codes them all, asking questions like Where is this person in their budgeting journey? What problem are they wanting to solve? Then, in regular research cycles they analyze all this collected feedback to plan for what鈥檚 up next  in YNAB!

  • Please please, implement the auto-distribute feature into web ynab. I use the web ynab often and trying to add split transactions without this feature is fairly annoying.

    • Hi Blue Drill ! Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this! If you haven't already (I see you wrote in above!), can you submit a Feature Request to let our product team know you'd like to see that auto-distribute option in the web app? Thank you so much! 馃槃

Blue Drill Given that this was requested a year ago or more, why wait for further inaction? Install the Toolkit for YNAB add-on (for Chrome or Firefox) and have that feature working right now.

Blue Drill You're welcome. Check out all the features.  It's rich with things lacking in native YNAB.

  • Howdy folks.  Maybe I'm doing it wrong but I can't get the Auto-Distribute functionality to work for me.  I have the option turned on in Toolkit.  I will create a transaction with two or more categories and a total outflow amount.  When I click the Auto-Distribute button, nothing happens.  If I enter the outflow amount of one of the categories, when I click on Auto-Distribute, that category outflow changes to the total outflow.  What is going on here?  I'm working in the web app, Win 10

    • JohnH  I have the same issue and haven't figured out what I'm doing wrong.

    • JohnH As you know, we didn't create the YNAB Toolkit, and we don't support it... but just this once...

I think the Auto-Distribute function is for the following case: you have a receipt with spending in multiple categories, and the sales tax is added in one lump at the bottom of the receipt. You'd like YNAB to auto-distribute that sales taxes proportionally among the spending categories.

In other words, in order for Auto-Distribute to work, you need to enter the total outflow, plus the pre-tax outflow for each line of the split. Then, when you hit the button, it will distribute the remaining amount proportionally.

Please let me know if I'm missing anything!
