More bulk edit functions

Hey there! I'd love to have the ability to bulk edit more fields on a set of selected transactions. For example, select a number of related transactions, all with different Payees (which is common with direct import, as sometimes vendors change the way the name shows up), and then click the bulk edit button and set them all to the same payee.

Similarly, it would be nice to be able to update the Memo field in this way as well.

Thanks for listening!

  • Hi meek !

First, thanks for caring enough about YNAB and budgeting to share your feedback with us!

I went ahead and forwarded your feedback to our Design Team :) They collect it—every last bit of it—in a database. Just about every day, they go through all of it and code it, asking questions like Where is this person in their budgeting journey? What problem are they wanting to solve? Then, in regular research cycles they analyze all this collected feedback to plan for What’s Up Next in YNAB.

All of which is to say: Even though this isn't specific feedback on your feedback (!), your feedback is important and it's in the very best hands.

I’m going to close this topic, but if you have anything to add this request, feel free to reach out to us! :)

  • +1, great idea! You can already do a few other things as bulk actions (approve, deny, clear) but label/field edits would be great, too.

  • Bulk updating a Payee is as common a Use Case as bulk updating a Category!   I am in my trial period, and this may well end up being a show stopper for me, as I end up having to manually rename tons of Payees :-(

Orchid Falafel Thanks for chiming in on this! While we don't have anything in the pipeline right now, have you checked out the Payee Management feature? From there, you can cleanup your payees by editing, deleting, combining, and changing your auto-categorization rules. You can also edit and define “Is” and “Contains” rules to automatically rename imported payees just how you’d like.

While this may not help in the specific case you're looking for, any changes you make in Payee Management will instantly affect the payees in your transaction activity. I hope it does the trick for now! 😊

    • Jannelle Thanks that did the trick for now....

  • Really need this. When I want to add metadata (like tag all transactions in a group as "Weekend getaway!") it would make it SO much easier.

    • Hi Spring Green Falafel ! Thanks for letting us know you'd like to see the option to edit multiple transactions at once. We really appreciate it! Would you mind sending that over as a Feature Request to let our design team know?

    • Nicole Happy to. Will do it now.

  • I, too would like this. We could do it with YNAB classic and it was SUPER helpful for fixing entries with slightly different names. Example: Starbucks vs Starbucks Coffee.

    • Eloth I know this isn't a substitute for a bulk edit payee feature, but if you do end up with multiple similar payees, you can merge them in the Manage Payees window. I recently went through and caught a bunch of these—"Amazon" and "", for example.

Matthew Thank you so much for this! I didn't know about the Manage Payees window. This is super helpful.

  • I am surprised that this is still not a feature.  Having to go through and manually enter in payees for a ton of transactions is very time consuming.

  • Been using my current YNAB budget for 4 years and have used Manage Payees extensively. Needless to say, I have (had) a LOT of payees. Every few months I review the list in the Manage module for regular data cleanup- merging, hiding, deleting, etc.

Last month something flaked out when combining 2 payees and now the payees for 1/2 off all transactions were merged together. According to YNAB, my employee is now like an old school mining town as they are responsible for my salary, entertainment, and groceries (like a company store). I am not above admitting PEBCAK aka User Error, but I am very familiar with how the Manage Payees module works and am very deliberate with my actions in there. I genuinely believe there was a bug, especially considering the payees that were merged were seemingly random. Support was unable to undo the merge nor restore an older version of my budget from before the merge.

OK that sucks. But trying to move on with my life I'd at least like to fix the recurring and monthly transaction only to find out bulk payee editing is not a thing. Really??? This situation went from terrible to even worse =(

  • I'm not sure why we can bulk edit category and flag, but not payee or memo. I would particularly like to edit the memo field of multiple transactions.

  • +1 super surprised this is not in!

  • Not being able to update memo for 20 transactions is very sad.

Come on guys, it's some basic CRUD app stuff :) (*wink*)

  • DiligentD Aquamarine Router Purple Griffin  I encourage you to get in touch with our design team to let them know that you'd like to see the ability to bulk edit memo fields by sending us a Feature Request. And, in the meantime, note that you can use Toolkit for YNAB to bulk edit memos if you'd like to do this in your budget today.
