# Rolling over monthly goals

I'm new...  I suspect that this a common question but I couldn't find an answer with the search feature...

How do goals roll over at the end of the month?

Let's say that I have a goal to budget \$400 on transportation per month.   And this month, I did budget \$400.  But this month, things went well and I only spent \$350.   What happens to the \$50 at the end of the month?

Also, what happens to my goal next month?  Since I was able to carry over \$50, do I just need to budget \$350 next month?

• If you set a monthly funding goal of \$400, then when April comes around and you hit quick budget, it will take \$400 from your To Be Budgeted (TBB), but the \$50 left over will automatically rollover and be in addition to the \$400.00. This work is say it is not a monthly funding goal but Target Category Balance By Date of \$1000, by December 2018, and you have \$375 in there, in April it will tell you that you need to budget \$31.50 to stay on track. These are good for car insurance, registration and Christmas.

• As Ruff said, the \$50 will roll over to next month and then next month will happen.

Like Ruff16965 said, that \$50 will rollover into the next month, but since you didn't budget it in April, and you have a budget based goal set (look at the budgeted column), it won't get you \$50 closer to that \$400 goal in April.

I have money roll over often enough, but I just continue to budget my goal (\$400) and leave the any extra to build a buffer! It's pretty exciting to see those categories grow, and my dollars age too!

• I might have missed the answer to the original question.  Using the original hypothetical:  \$400 budgeted in the current month, but only \$350 spent.  \$50 will rollover to the next month.

In that next month, does the rollover count towards the goal or does a new amount need to be fully budgeted?   Concretely, will the goal be green or yellow if \$350 is set aside?

• Hi Saish Dawg , the answer depends on what type of goal you set for that category.  If it was a "monthly funding" goal, it will not consider what is in the category already.  If it was a "category balance by date" or "Category balance" it will look at what is in the category already.  It's up to you.

TryingToGetAhead Thanks for the clarification.  I was referring to the monthly funding goal, and that's a bummer.  I would love a new goal type to simply have the balance be a given amount for the month.  So, set it at \$400, and with \$50 rolling over, it would go green with \$350 budgeted.

That goal already exists (target category balance), but it unfortunately will not alert you that you are underfunded with an orange status.

• TryingToGetAhead The only workaround I can see is on the last day of the month to move all the categories that have balances into "Stuff I Forgot to Budget", then let the month roll over, then see orange in all the categories and Quick Budget them, and finally re-allocate out from "Stuff I Forgot to Budget".  Other thoughts?

Saish Dawg Until such time as YNAB implements the type of goal you want, you could work around it.  Today is May 31.  After you know you're done spending in the example category (\$50 left, \$400 monthly funding goal) you can move the remaining \$50 to TBB in May, then the goal of fund \$400 in June will give you the answer you desire.

That's not what I do.  What I do is, I store all my goals as monthly funding amounts.  For June, I will one-click populate my budget with "underfunded."  Then I go through and make my adjustments to set categories like that at the correct level, and allocate the salvaged funds to whatever is most important.  YNAB would turn all the categories I reduced orange, but the Toolkit lets me see them as a more muted blue that is easier on the eyes.  Which is about what I want, because I don't need the program yelling at me to put more money in categories that have enough.

Of course, what I do only works if I am able to budget an entire month at a time; but I am in the position of being that far ahead.  So I do a workaround to recreate the Income for Next Month that was omitted from web-based YNAB, and am content with my process.

• Patzer Thanks for the suggestions.  It sounds similar.  Though you are moving to TBB instead of a specialized category, and you in effect overfund and then reduce instead of allocating underfunded from zero and then adding the additional funds in.  But similar approaches.

Saish Dawg Google Toolkit for YNAB.  It is a browser add-on that creates user interface functionality that the YNAB team has not seen fit to include in the base product.  The Toolkit gives me things like running balances, muted colors on the meaningless underfunded goals, budget screen indicators of upcoming scheduled transactions in the current month without having to click on the inspector, ability to change the default transaction entry from enter and start another to enter and done, and other custom stuff I like.  The features range from convenient to critical for my use of web based YNAB.

Toolkit is available for Firefox or Chrome; but I'm not on a Mac, and I'd never voluntarily use IE or Edge anyway.

• MsTJ I go between letting money stack up in categories that don't necessarily need them (cleaner) or sucking it up and letting some category go orange because I didn't allocate the monthly goal that month.
Truth is, I'd be happy for a "target balance at the start of each month"

Gray Griffin Me too, seems like a pretty common scenario that people would want

• For monthly categories like groceries or gas (those categories that I replenish each month), I sweep the leftover money out of the categories to TBB at the end of the month (leaving the categories at zero). I then budget as normal with all the funds in my TBB.
