PC Financial MasterCard unable to connect

This week PC Financial updated their website.  At the time, I was also asked to update my password to include a special character.  Since this event I have been unable to sync my data with YNAB, with the statement "We're having trouble connecting to this financial institution."  I have tried the troubleshooting steps, and have tried using both my new and old password.   Are other PCF users having this problem?

    Sorry for the trouble!

Our Direct Import partner let us know that PC Financial's recent update, caused some issues with the direct import connection. They're currently working on rebuilding that integration, but it may take some time.

You can keep an eye on our status page for updates !:)

  • Same... I use this card for pretty much everything so YNAB is useless to me at the moment -and has been for quite some time now because of this issue. The thought of going back in and manually entering all transactions since Nov 9th does NOT appeal to me.

  • Hi Cowboy Ry  peraautrt  and Jennifer Leigh  !

Hopefully, our Direct Import partner will be able to get the necessary file types to restore that connection. In the meantime, File Based Importing does support CSV files.

Importing CSV files is our last resort option, because there isn't an industry standard format, and they need to be formatted just right, but once formatted correctly the process is quick and easy!

Give File Based Importing a try to keep your accounts up to date for the time being. If you receive an error that there aren't any transactions to import, the file might not be formatted correctly and you can try this (unofficial) CSV converter

Try dragging and dropping a CSV file into YNAB and let me know if you have questions! :)

  • Same issue with the same response from PC Financial.  Although I a YNAB 4 user still and always downloaded QIF files to import.  They don't offer this file format as an option anymore.  I downloaded their CSV file, formatted it for YNAB import and it did not import correctly.  The dates were all off significantly.  Apparently it was a time machine back to 1983.  Not sure why this happened.  Everything else imported correctly.  Any ideas?

    • Hi thebeardedjourneyman !

Peraautrt is right. We don't mean to point fingers, but our Direct Import partner is trying to adjust to the changes PC Financial made. The initial issue was that PC Financial removed the necessary file formats for direct import. Our Direct Import partner is working with them to try to regain access to those formats or find a work around. We can't offer a time line for this issue because it depends on a number of factors, but we'll keep the status page updated with what we find out! :)

    • Hi thebeardedjourneyman !

Sorry you're having trouble with File Based Importing. From other users in the thread, it sounds like PC Financial only offers .CSV files. They're our last resort, because formatting can vary by institution and there isn't an industry standard, so they need to be just right.

Here's a 3-line example of how a CSV file needs to be formatted. The first line is the header, the second line is an example outflow, and the last line is an example inflow.

      Date,Payee,Memo,Outflow,Inflow

      07/23/16,Payee 1,Memo,100.00,

      07/24/16,Payee 2,Memo,,500.00

You'll notice every field is separated by a comma, so it's important that every field is present in each line, even if your transactions don't fill every field. Always include the "Date,Payee,Memo,Outflow,Inflow" header line at the very top. Any field can be left blank except the date.

In a spreadsheet program, it would look like this (just make sure the file extension is saved as .csv!):

A fellow YNABer created this (unofficial) CSV converter which may help convert your CSV file from your bank into the format above. You're welcome to give it a try! We aren't able to support it if it doesn't work for your bank's particular format, though. Let me know how it goes!

Sorry for the trouble! One of our Direct Import partners let us know that this issue with President's Financial will take longer than usual to repair - because of this, they've decided to remove the institution from their supported list for the time being. They hope to re-add the institution once they've rebuilt the connection, but they aren't able to offer a time frame on just how long that may take. Our other Direct Import partner is having trouble as well, but they've left the institution listed as available as they continue to work on a solution.

Purple Grizzly It's not YNAB's fault.  PC Mastercard wrecked everyone when they revamped their online banking platform and got rid of the file types necessary to make DI's work.  Check Reddit and you'll see that this change has impacted everyone using finance budgeting software (Quicken, MINt etc.).  Everyone got screwed when PC made the change.  The best thing you can do, as I did, is write PC and tell them that the change was unacceptable. I too am affected by this tremendously (so much so that we've gotten other cards from another bank until PC can sort their crap out and serve their customers better rather than just worry about a shiny new UI).

    • Purple Grizzly Sorry for the trouble! As Thebeardedjourneyman mentioned, PC Financial's update removed the file type our Direct Import partner relies on for importing transactions. They've let us know this will be a longterm issue. Another of our Direct Import partners is trying to work through that issue, but they're having trouble connecting to another popular bank (Royal Bank of Canada, specifically) so we've been cautious with offering it as an alternative. Our Direct Import partners are trying to get things back in order, but it may take some time.

  • So PC Financial changed the website and it no longer supports QFX file format.  The CSV file they provide is not in the correct format for file based import to YNAB.  I only use file based importing anyway so I wrote an Excel spreadsheet with a macro to change the format so it can be imported correctly.  It involves opening the spreadsheet, pressing a convert button and it will reformat the file and write a new file to the same directory as spreadsheet.  I've tested it at home on my MacBook and did some work to port it to a windows PC.  They seem to be working correctly, but I'm not a real coder so I make no guarantees.  Would anyone be interested?  I'm not sure if I can upload it here but feel free to PM me.

    • MTRing The fact that PC no longer supports QFX files is a big part of the direct import issue. Our Direct Import partner uses QFX files for their side of things, so they're trying to build a work around/exception for PC Financial. I think it's wonderful you were able to code a work around!

There's also this CSV converter, but something tells me that one built specifically for PC Financial would be the better option here. :)

Seems like sometimes the account balance on the PC Financial dashboard does not match YNAB no matter how much I dig for missing transactions. Today I imported back to September to try and find the missing $. No luck. Are there pending transactions that somehow register on the account balance but not in the transaction listing???

Cowboy Ry absolutely!  It's so frustrating.

From what I can figure, the balance page is updated with all cleared transactions...

Whereas the transaction list takes about 12 hours for the cleared transactions to actually show up in the list.  It's left me scratching my head trying to reconcile, and a major source of frustration.

I think it's a timing issue with PC... though I can't make sense how it makes sense to any of their programmers.

  • I just wrote PC another nasty gram.  I guess at this point all we can do is smother them with feedback until it gets some traction. I’ll be interested to see if they are using a standard canned answer for everyone. If they could just set out a timeline for the fix it would give us something to hang on to, right now it’s hard to tell if they care. How hard can it be to support a tabular file type? I’m no programmer but this can’t be difficult.... maybe they need to hire YNAB to sort it out!

  • I'm in the same PC MC boat. . . so very frustrating.  thebeardedjourneyman I suck at writing "nasty gram" emails as Cowboy Ry called it.  You wouldn't have a copy of the one you wrote that I could copy and paste would you?

I don't seem to be having all the .CSV (comma separated values if anyone is curious what a .csv file is) issues that others are having.  Or maybe I am and just don't know it.  The payee and the category come up blank so I tab back and forth between windows to fill out the required information, usually though most of the transactions I can match up manually.  It's not convenient but it's working.

From what I can tell on PC's now very hard to navigate website the value on the dashboard includes pending transactions but pending transactions don't get exported to the .csv you have to enter those manually.

I am really hoping PC gets their act together (or their head out of their collective . . . . ) so the Direct Importer can put it back on the list so I can add it again and go on with my budgeting day!

"When will PC support other file formats to download? You are seriously affecting my ability to budget properly and is starting to make me think about switching cards. This is absolutely ridiculous. What is so difficult about this??? What could you possibly gain by preventing other software from accessing my data? I would like a specific answer to this question, no pre baked patronizing crap. And don’t tell me it’s a security issue. If the big 6 banks are able to support it, you can too. If you’re working on a fix, I want a timeline."

    and their answer is:

"In regards to your inquiry. We have increased the security of our website to protect your financial information and in doing so, will not allow aggregator financial websites such as Mint.com to access your data at this time. This is strictly a security issue. We know that is what you said you did not want to hear but unfortunately that is the truth of the matter. That said, we have collected a lot of customer feedback about the issue & are discussing internally how best we can implement a solution. We will be letting our customers know what is decided."

Suggest all y'all keep sending them notes, letting them know that this sucks. I stand by my statement that it's not a security issue. YNAB connects to my RBC account no issue, and I would hope that the big banks worry a little bit about security....

"On January 14 you wrote, "we have collected a lot of customer feedback about the issue and we are discussing internally how best we can implement a solution".  I am writing to see if there are any updates.  As I am sure you are aware but the confusion and frustration regarding the decision of PC Financial to drop .QIX is increasing.  A quick preview of ANY finance budgeting software forums or Reddit will show you this.  I, along with many, many others, are baffled by the crippling of our usage of this card.  I have applied for a new card with TD Financial but would considering returning to PC if this issue was rectified.  As I am in a number of conversations in various forums regarding this issue and am posting the conversations and interactions we are having I would appreciate a non-canned response.  Thank you."

I will post the reply.  If we continue to get canned responses let's all just keep messaging.  Perhaps if they start receiving multiple messages every day they will have to think more seriously about this stupid crippling decision.

I'm messaging again this morning.  I'm not a 'let's make demands and bend them to our will' sort of guy... but I think if enough of us contact them they may take it seriously.

  • Here we go again--my message:

Good morning. Has there been any updates on re-adding qfx/ofx downloads back into the website? It's making personal budgeting software a nightmare not being able to use this universal download format. I am strongly considering switching cards simply because it is too cumbersome. I've spoken with many people who are having trouble with it--be it Mint, Quicken, or YNAB that they are using. When can we expect to have this key functionality restored?

    And the response:

Thank you for your email. In regards to your concern, we apologize for any elements of our new website that you have found unsatisfactory and for any frustration caused. Please be aware our new site is not compatible with Intuit programs due to security concerns and we currently do not have an estimate or time frame on if it will become a compatible feature with our new site at this time. We have increased the security of our website to protect your financial information and in doing so, will not allow aggregator financial websites such as Mint.com to access your data at this time. That said, we are always re-evaluating new updates based on customer comments, so we will make sure our team is aware of your feedback. Should you have any additional questions or concerns you can e-mail or contact us through your online account. This service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for your convenience. Response time for any question or concern is 24 hours.

    Sincerely,

Not to be deterred, I replied:

Thank you for your response.  Let's be perfectly candid: I am not requesting access for Intuit.  I am asking for a .qfx/.ofx download option to be returned.  This universal financial data format download doesn't impede website security in the slightest.

I understand the necessity for two-factor authentication, and have no issues with that.  I do have issues with not providing a universal financial data format download that has worked impeccably since 1997.  Many (if not all) of the major Financial Institutions in this country must adhere to the same strict security regulations as President's Choice Financial, yet they have no problem providing ofx downloads to their valued customers.

I will take the canned response as PC's willingness to let many customers (including myself) migrate to other vendors for their Mastercard needs.

Obviously I would prefer a direct import option, but barring that ofx would be acceptable to me.  I've also learned that canned responses really irritate me.  Anyone else made any progress?
