Unable to link Canadian Capital One Credit Card Account.

I've been able to link most of my other accounts, but when I try to import my Capital One credit card account, it says

```
Connection Blocked
Go to your financial institution's website and log in to your accounts. Look for an alert/message that's blocking the connection. Then try again!
```

But when I go to my account on Cap1's website, there is no alert of the sort. I also checked my SMS and my emails and got no notification whatsoever. How should I proceed next?

Thanks!

  • I had the same issue and the YNAB team has been looking at this for the last month but no fix has been found yet (at least to whatever has been causing my problem)

    • Hi Sea Green Boa !

      I see where we asked our import partner to investigate this issue, so I've asked them for an update. Hopefully, we'll hear back from them soon! :)

  • Hi Pink Sloth !

    That alert/message to acknowledge on your online banking account is usually a confirmation (outstanding paperless billing requests can even cause this error).

    Go ahead and log in to your financial institution and see if there are any actions you need to take. A lot of banks only show alerts on the web version of their online banking, so it’s generally best to check from a computer instead of a mobile device.

    Capital One also requires you to add additional security. Please log directly into your account at Capital One and add a phone number by selecting "Alert Contact Points" under the "Messages & Alerts" dropdown in the top row.

    Then, head back over to YNAB and try connecting again!

    If nothing was there but you still aren’t able to connect, let us know and we’ll have our import partner investigate. :)

      Faness

      I logged in to CapOne. It’s not an alert but information you

      can click on to review what happened. When I clicked on it and then logged back in the info click spot was gone.

      Then I went back to ynab to try and link accounts again. It now tells me direct importing is temporarily unavailable...

  • Hi thank you for the reply, I checked again and no there is no pending alert or action to take whatsoever.  My phone number is already there also.

    Just to reiterate, this is for CapitalOne Canada, not the US version. But I can login from the .com website and I get redirected to the Canadian version.

    • Pink Sloth Thank you for double-checking that! I haven't received confirmation that the connection won't work for Canadian connections, but I've asked our import partner to look into it and I sent you an email with a few more details! :)

      Faness any update on this? I tried to add Canadian Costco capital one CC, it says connection is being blocked, login to the website to see the alert. I log in but there is no alert to approve. No email from capital one or text message to approve. On the good news everything else works for us it’s just this one account. I contacted capital one and they said it should work.

  • White Chicken 07 to base,

    We have exactly the same issue. We can't link our Canadian Capital One account for fire mission on grid! I say again, we cannot move forward. Requesting more ammunition.

    Please acknowledge. Splash out.

  • I also cannot link my Canadian CapitalOne Credit Card account. I have just started my free trial. I will not use this app if this cannot be resolved. I am also having issues with my Canadian Scotiabank Scene Visa though its a different error.

    • Hi Cyan Chef !

      I wanted to make a separate comment for the issue you mentioned with Scotiabank. I'm seeing a successful connection, but the account isn't linked. When you have a moment, give these steps a try:

      1. Hover over the name of your Scotiabank account on the left hand side of your budget and click on the Edit icon.
      2. Click on the Link Account option.
      3. Select your Scotiabank account from the list of connections.

      That should get that account connected for you! :)

      for scotia. I did that. It shows as connected. But nothing is importing. I am using a MacBook to do everything and I do not know what swiftid is so I’m assuming I did not use that either.

      Still not connecting for cap one

    • Cyan Chef The Scotia account is connected, which means the credentials were accepted, but the account isn't linked, meaning the account isn't tied to that connection. Following the instructions above, should get it Linked and not just Connected. :)

      We're working on the Capital One issue and sending along the details we've gathered. We're hoping to have an update soon!

    • Hi all! Simon Cyan Chef NJD Green Sun

      We've heard reports of a CapitalOne security breach message sent out last week, that might be the culprit here. Can you log in to your bank, and check on your account? A colleague found an alert on her Canadian CapitalOne Costco credit card on the homepage. Once you dismiss that, try connecting again!

      If nothing was there but you still aren’t able to connect, let us know and we’ll have our import partner investigate.

      Nicole thanks for the reply! As others have stated. It says your connection is being blocked, log on to the website and look for an alert. Well I have logged on multiple times looking all over for an alert, with no luck.

    • Hi NJD !

      I see you reached out to support as well and Kait responded. Can you let her or me know once you've double checked for any announcements about the security breach? Our import partner is still looking into this issue, but any details we can pass along are a great help!

      Faness So there is an banner or alert about the security breach, but that just opens up a window that explains what happened with the security breach and what happened. This does not show attempts to log in and approve them as safe.

  • I went onto CapOne and found a “click here for more information regarding  the security breech” it wasn’t an “alert”. When I clicked on it it took me to a new page. After that I logged back in to CapOne and the “click for info” was gone.

    when I went back to ynab to try linking the account it now says direct import is unavailable.

    Please advise from here as it still isn’t working.

    • Hi Cyan Chef !

      Thanks for sending along those details! I'm still seeing that the connection is being blocked. Are you using SwiftID on a phone to verify the account? If so, would you mind trying a different account verification method? If not, and that still doesn't work, let me know and I'll update our import partner!

  • Not to be a pessimist, but I suggest you guys forget about trying to link your Capital One card. I had the same issue more than a month ago and have tried many things suggested to no avail. YNAB is still an awesome tool so why not try either inputting manually the transactions or doing regular downloads from Capital One?

    • Sea Green Boa We truly appreciate your patience with this issue! While we're big fans of manual entry, we really do want direct import to work, so we'll continue to work on getting this ironed out. It may take a while, but we're not giving up! :)

  • I'm also subscribing to this topic. I started the free trial, but if this is a deal-breaker.  My Costco Capital one card is one of my primary spending methods with many small transactions that I don't want to micromanage.  Note: Mint also had this problem with Costco Capital One Canada, from my limited understanding the login for Canada is different from the US.

    • Gold Pony We'll continue to work on this connection with our import partner, and appreciate your patience. To keep your account up to date in the meantime, I hope you'll give File-Based Importing a try!
