Adding Capital One bank account more persistently

I've just started using YNAB and I really love what it does, but I've had a bit of a frustrating time with how it interfaces with my Capital One bank account. Every day, so presumably every time an update is pulled, I have to re-enter a security code. My other accounts have been totally fine. I know from personal experience that Capital One's online system is very aggressive when it detects new devices, but is there any way to set up this integration so that I don't need to enter a temporary PIN every single day?

  • Hi   Silver Lion !

I’m sorry you’re having to re-authenticate your accounts so frequently—I know it’s frustrating! We’ve been digging into this issue for a while now and we learned that at this time, certain security protocols require repeated re-authorizations. In other words, they’re expected.

This is great for security, of course, but not so great for the import experience. We completely understand that which is why we’ve had our Direct Import partner looking into the issue for months — pushing and prodding them to make it go away. Ultimately, they’ve determined they just don’t have any control over these security requirements.

In some cases, we’ve found those will slowly start to subside, but we can’t guarantee it since each connection is unique.

We’re hopeful this will improve as our Direct Import partner develops more direct connections, but right now (and for the foreseeable future) it is expected.

If you’re finding that you can’t connect and/or import even after re-entering your credentials, that is not expected. Please let me know if that’s the case!

    • Jannelle Has there been any update on this? I am a new YNAB budgeter, but I've already had to get a temporary code sent with my capital one account everyday. I work in a SCIF and in order to do this at work I have to leave the SCIF and check my phone, write down the code, come back in and enter it. Sometimes, it times out before I can make it back to my desk. I never have had this problem with other apps like Mint. Usually, I have to answer security questions, but once the security questions are recorded in the app, then it just authenticates automatically. I am enjoying YNAB in general, but there is no way I am going to do this every day just to get my accounts to authenticate.

Purple Hammerhead Thanks for reaching out for an update! It doesn't look like there has been any major improvements, although our Direct Import partner will never give up! They are always looking to improve their connections.

As for Mint, we do use a different Direct Import partner than them. In fact, Mint just so happens to have a monopoly on Intuit, who owns them! Whether or not you'll need to re-authenticate depends on the institution and type of connection they have with each particular institution.

Direct connections are generally more stable, which means they should hardly ever require a reauthorization, even when a one-time password is involved. However, our Direct Import partner doesn't currently have a direct connection for this particular financial institution.

They (and I!) definitely recognize this is something they need to work on improving. In fact, having a direct connection to all institutions is the goal! My understanding, though, is that it does require quite a lot of work between our data provider and the institution to be able to create a more seamless integration. So while it's not out of the cards, there's definitely no immediate resolution I can offer.

I'm sorry - I know that's not great news, but I hope it gives you a better idea of what's going on here and why. If you have any other questions please let me know!

  • I assume this is happening to everyone but this is also happening to me. Would be awesome if we can fix it. Would reaching out to Capital One do anything?

    • Hi Tomato Projector !

Thanks for asking! While it can't hurt to reach out to them, we heard back from a user that Capital One stated each time YNAB connects it's being seen as a new connection (just like if you used a new computer each time you accessed Capital One), thus requiring the verification steps. We've passed this info along to our Direct Import partner to see if they're able to adjust things on their end, but we aren't sure just yet! We're keeping our fingers crossed but this could be a long-standing issue!

  • I'm having the same issue, but I'm also using Mint which works without re-auth every time.

The difference is that I had to authorize Mint as an App in my Capital One account, and I can see it as a Linked Apps in the Security settings of my CapOne acc, see the attached screenshot.

My guess is that if YNAB is trying to access the API as an unauthorized app, triggering the 2nd factor auth every time. Or maybe there's a different API altogether.

It would be SWEET if you guys could fix that. :)

Batman You're right on the nose! It looks like Mint has a "direct connection" with Capital One, which is why you're not prompted to reauthorize.

These direct connections are a big feat but our Direct Import partner (Quovo) is up for the task! They won't ever quit working to improve their connections. 😊

    • Jannelle Thank you for the update. Please share with Quovo that Capital One has a transactions API they can easily tap into https://developer.capitalone.com/api-products/customer-transactions.  Perhaps a bit different than previous pairing models, so they should look into what's available now.

  • Jannelle  I'm having an issue with both cap one bank & cap one credit card for the past 48 hours. I select a number to text, and don't get a text. The next screen I get says my code is 'not recognized' & times out after ~10 sec. Is this due to a fix in the works re: above? Or is this a separate bug?

Same problem in Chrome & on Android.
