Only certain future months available to view

I'm not one to budget into future months by the method of tabbing over to the next months, so this is really the first time I am even looking at this. While playing around with my budget I noticed in my main (shared with hubs) budget, I can only choose to see July 2019, not past that.

However, in the same account, in my personal budget I could choose to see up until August but not past that.

Mostly I'm just curious why this is like this? I wouldn't put it past me to have clicked some setting I didn't realize.

Thanks for your help.

  • You can't get to August until you budget something (even $0.01) in July.

  • Ok thanks, weird that if you budget it and then remove it, it still "opens the gates" and lets you look at August. I was confused because I had removed it so both budgets July were showing 0 in every column.

Purple Admiral That's a bug. It's not supposed to.

  • bevocat  How does one fix this bug? I can open August as well. There is $0.00 in every category both in Jul and Aug.

Gold Rhythm  I don't know if it is a bug or not but I see the same behavior.  Once a month is "viewable"  it stays that way even if i remove the budgeting from the previous month.

ETA I won't report as a bug because I can't see any reason it is a problem.

Herman It is a bug, and I certainly don't call attention to it by reporting it as a bug either. I know it is, because I had to report a different bug and they had to recalc something on the back-end, which suddenly made everything unavailable again. The other issue recurred, and I did the fix, which required me budgeting $0.01/mo out through 2023, then zeroing it out. Even though nothing's budgeted, 2023 remains available to flip through to.

Would you mind submitting a Bug Report, to put this on our radar? That way our bug squashing team can take a closer look. 😄

Right, I think it's fine either way, I don't *need* to mindlessly click to month to month to month. I was just wondering what had caused 1 budget to access more months than the other and now I know. Thanks for everyone's help.

Nicole This is a pretty inoffensive bug.  I can think of several much more serious bugs that YNAB has been declining to fix for years.

Superbone Nope, SFTF doesn't count.  YNAB didn't decline to fix SFTF, they tried and couldn't figure out how to fix that one.

Patzer And yet the Toolkit has had a simple notification for years.

Superbone Which makes it even more astounding that YNAB couldn't figure it out, given that there was a functional example of how to fix it.

Patzer Superbone The fix is mostly fine, except when you try to go backward in time. But since some people started relying on SFTF to lie to themselves, they decided not to roll out the fix. But if the fix ever gets taken out of my budget I am totally cancelling my subscription...

While i have no idea why yet another thread has been redirected to sftf, I agree the beta fix works fine.  I would be unhappy to lose it but i wouldn't cancel because once you know about sftf, you'd have to be completely brain dead to get caught by it.

Herman while I agree it’s simple, cancelling would be more of a “Seriously, people?” protest vote than something about losing important functionality. They almost fixed it. But because people who don’t know how to manage their finances complained (or so it seems), they decided not to roll out the fix/ work out the kinks of the fix.

I think at this point I’ve had the fix close to a year. In that time they’ve added pending transactions on both web and mobile which are so beyond useless I am sputtering. I used to go deeply to bat for this new software. I find I can’t anymore.

My car repair category says they fix this bug before SFTF.

Herman I don't regard SFTF as a bug.  It is an inevitable consequence of fluid months and budgeting directly in the future months.  Arguably, it is poor program design to have no notification of this on the current month budget page; but as you note, once someone is aware of SFTF it ceases to be a problem.

I have the beta fix, and it is slightly better for my work flow than the non-fixed version of YNAB.  But not enough better to cancel my subscription if it went away.  My subscription cancellation point is if something ever happens to permanently break Toolkit and YNAB has still not made the important-to-me Toolkit features part of the base package.

Most of the really serious bugs that I know of (and some really dubious design choices) are associated with credit cards, and I sidestep them all by setting my cards up as checking accounts.

Superbone You know, you should ask. Maybe if it’s known that there is a beta fix and people start requesting to have it added to their budgets the devs will realize that the intel they got on it breaking workflows was bad and that more people would rather have the fix than have SFTF.

I also asked for the pending transaction beta while I was at it.
