Target Balance Goal and Reduce overfunding quick budget

I am playing around with goals a bit as a way to notify me when a category that I fund the same amount every month reaches a cap so I can stop funding it until it falls below the cap again. Well, I have a balance that is not at the target, but it's telling me I have the category overfunded. Any idea why?

Does it have something to do with hitting the target at some point and then spending the money, so it's not calculating correctly to rebuild toward the target balance? Why would that be the case since it's just about meeting the target?

I just want a goal that tells me if I have $X in it or not.

  • Hi! Thanks for letting us know about this category that's giving you the option to Reduce Overfunding for what appears to be a strange amount. We can reproduce the behavior with other Target Savings Balance goals with no date. Since this doesn't seem right, I have sent you an email to connect you with our Bugs Team, who can help get to the bottom of what's happening!

  • I'm encountering something similar.

Any chance you have/had a scheduled transaction against that category? That seems to be confusing the goal in my budget.

Please keep us posted on the outcome of your troubleshooting.

Sky Blue Griffin Wanderer Sure. there really is no goal type that completely fits what I want here, which is that I want a Monthly Funding goal with an open-ended savings target that allows me to spend out of the category all along.

What I don't understand is how the category can be overfunded if it hasn't reached the goal.

I use the same functionality for my reimbursement categories, which are prefunded so they can't go negative. If overfunding calculates incorrectly I won't be able to use the quick budget.

  • I'd like to know where it got the $19.86. It doesn't seem related to the other numbers at first glance.

Move Light Sound Life I figured it out. It is ignoring the spending so it's not actually looking at the category balance. All it did was take the balance from the category when I set up the goal and add what I budgeted in subsequent months.

I created the goal in April, mid-month when the available was $259.86. If you add in May and June's $60 contributions, the balance would have been $379.86 without the spending.

For a target balance goal with no date specified my expectation would be that Overfunded would be based on the actual available balance vs. target amount.

    • nolesrule That's great feedback! Since you've got an open email conversation going on with Support - could you add it there? They'll get it over to our product team.

    • nolesrule Good sleuthing.

I wonder - is it a problem with the goal itself or just that quick budget option?

Especially since the information at the top says the goal is only 65% funded, which tallies with what I would expect, maybe only the reduce overfunding button needs a logic tweak.

However, is there not a "budget goal amount/underfunded"? Did the "reduce overfunding" button take its place?

Last time the goals changed (ok, maybe it was a couple times ago), I got fed up and changed everything back to set monthly contributions unless they were already at a cap. Maybe it's time to revisit them, but it's not super high on my list.

Move Light Sound Life the goal itself is correct. It's the quick budget amount that is wrong since it's not overfunded.

Any movement on this? It was reported as a bug 4 months ago. It makes using full budget Auto Assign impossible because it removes money from the category when it should be adding money to the category due to the calculation error.

    TL;DR bump!
