Credit Card workings in YNAB continue to elude me

I have just reconciled both my bank and cc account.  In my budget account I have a SIZABLE positive available balance.

How is that possible?

  • Do you mean your Credit Card Payment category has a sizeable Available amount? (That category tells you how much is reserved to send them.) That's usually the case before you pay your credit card. (Mine, for instance, has about 2 months of CC charges in it just before I send in a payment for the statement balance.)

A card with paid-in-full status should have its Payment category cover the entire debt / account balance. If more is Available in the category than that, feel free to move the excess to elsewhere in the budget.

  • Hey TMACMI ! Is it the account balance (left side) or the Payment column with the positive amount? This HelpDoc has an example of what a paid in full credit card may look like in your budget, and how to compare the two. Let us know how it goes!

  • I apologize for the delay in responding. Notifications from this go to my wife's email since she is the account holder.   I was also trying to get my credit card balance down to a perfect $0 for a good reconciliation. That couldn't happen because of various auto payments.  I pay the balance off at least 2x a month.

In any event, my Amex balance is $18.94.  This is what YNAB is saying.  It doesn't make sense to me

      1. You don't need to have a zero balance to reconcile. Right now it's more than $170 off from the real world. (I assume that's where the $18.94 came from.) Reconcile the account as described here. Also, your account balance should be negative if you owe that $18.94. Below, I'm assuming that you do, in fact, owe that amount. If that's not true, then let me know.

      2. After the account balance is accurate, you can tackle the budget. In this case, you have way more reserved toward your payment than necessary. Select the AMEX category. Type this in the budget cell:

      18.94 - 1498.75

When you're done, the green payment Available will exactly match the account balance in YNAB.

dakinemaui Thank you for the reply.  I appreciate you taking the time.  I understand that it doesn't have to be $0, I was just shooting for the best possible baseline given my confusion.

One of the items that may be causing me trouble when reconciling is the lag it takes for importing.

There are transactions processed in  my credit card account

I have already put them in my ynab account

Do I note them as cleared since they are already shown in both places? or do I wait until they are imported

TMACMI If you previously entered them in YNAB and then they import from linked account, YNAB should match them up and there will be a :link: icon beside the transaction. In this case you accept the transaction. Anything without a link icon is a transaction that could not be matched. In that case you may have entered it but the amount is slightly off. You can manually match these from within the account transactions. Select each transaction (the one you entered and the one imported) and then select Match. YNAB will update your transaction to the correct amount and the icon will show up.  Select accept.

TMACMI Do not mark them as cleared until they have actually cleared your credit card.

    • TMACMI Yes, you should clear when they show up on the CC as final (not pending) when you reconcile. This is because the balance the CC shows includes those amounts. A later import will simply match and will not mess that up.

  • Thank you all.  I've cleaned it up.  I'm optimistic that I have a hand on it!
