Repeating transactions

Is there a way in the Web version of YNAB to indicate when a transaction repeats?  I have several transactions that have entered manually (paychecks that repeat every other week, car payments that repeat monthly, etc.).

In the iPad version, it shows the repeat frequency right under the payee, but I don’t see that—or a way to enable it—in the Web version.

  • Click in the date field. Click on Make Repeating at the bottom of the calendar. Choose your interval.

    • Superbone I know how to create repeating transactions; I just wanted to see if there’s an easy way to see if a transaction was one that repeated.  The iPad version of YNAB clearly shows that, but I don’t see that on the Web version.

  • Some people use flags to distinguish these. I put the date I can expect the bill to arrive in the memo and whether it's auto-paid or something I have to take action in my bill pay service. (A memo like this also tells me it's a recurring transaction.)

    • dakinemaui Thanks!  I’m actually using the ‘blue’ flag to indicate automatic payments (which are essentially repeating), so that’s probably good enough.  Another way could be to write the day of the month in the payee name to indicate it repeats, e.g., could use “1 - Mortgage” or “13 - Electric” if those repeated on the 1st and 13th of every month).

Sea Green Saxophone The day of the month in the memo seems redundant with the transaction date to me.

As an aside, one approach to tell if the scheduled amount is "stale" or not (a holdover from the previous month's amount), is to put the month in the memo when you update the amount. (This is only an issue when the amount changes, of course; for example, the electric bill.) A mismatch between memo-month and transaction date-month means stale.

    • dakinemaui Actually I just realized I used the day of the month in the Category.  This helped me when setting up my budget to make sure I didn’t forget anything.  Not sure if it’s still need or helpful.  It kind of makes things cluttered to read.  Maybe I’ll rename them and try using your suggestion of the month in the memo field.  Thanks.

Sea Green Saxophone Having the day in the category name does help when allocating a partial month, as does ordering by outflow date (within the group). When I got to where I could budget in month-sized chunks, I no longer needed to see the day in the budget view.

  • I never noticed the "Repeat:" + dropdown after you click on Make Repeating either until I was messing around on my phone and thought there must be a way to do it on the web. There are a lot of options - Daily, Weekly, Every other week, Twice a month, Monthly etc." I appreciate their nuance of having Every 4 weeks vs. Monthly even.

    • JC No problem creating repeating transactions on the Web or mobile versions of YNAB; I just wanted to see if there was a way to tell if a transaction repeats.  YNAB mobile clearly shows that, but I don’t see that on the Web version.  I agree, the flexibility of the schedule for repeat transactions is excellent.

  • Sea Green Saxophone are you able to share a screenshot for context?

    • Zaire Sure.  I have attached one screenshot of the mobile version (indicating the transaction repeats), and one from the web (which does not show whether the transaction repeats).

Sea Green Saxophone I see. I don't think that's available on the web (to the best of my knowledge anyway).

I rely on the "scheduled Transactions" sections (the grey bar at the very top of my list of transaction.) To keep tabs on my recurrent transaction.

That being said I see how having that info on an individual transaction can be helpful.

Perhaps you can consider submitting it as feature request?

    • Zaire Yes, I may do that.  It’s not a big deal though because, as you do, I can look at my upcoming / scheduled transactions — most of those will repeat.  I’m also using the flags features to tag my auto draft transactions blue.  Most if not all of those will be repeating anyway.
