Why does payment to Pay Off Credit Card require a Budget Category? and What Category should I use

I am trying to get started and I am CONFUSED!!! I have auto downloaded from my checking account and I was happily categorizing debits until I got to one ,"Payment to Costco Anywhere Card" (this is a visa card); Iget that this is a transfer, but the YNAB Credit Card video showed that the budget category should say, "No Category Needed". But I am being prompted for a budget category. And I have no idea as to what category this should be applied to. Help!

  • Is the costco credit card on budget?  If it is a category should not be needed.  If it is not a category is needed because the money is leaving your budget.  Your screen shot does not show enough detail to confirm.

Is it possible that you have created payees called “Transfer to” and “Payment to?” These should be built-in payees and they are punctuated differently than the ones in the screenshot.

  • Hi Biff Trout !

I believe WordTenor is right! Instead of "Payment To Costco Anywhere Card" look for a payee that states, "Payment[Name of Account]". If you named the account "Costco" in your budget, then the payee would be "Payment: Costco" - it should also be towards the top of your Payee list.

Faness Curious. Are employees required to come answer all the questions? The OP disappeared here probably because their question was answered so there isn’t a reason to bump this thread, and it clutters the main feed, making it harder to find new questions.

If so, I don’t want to criticize you for doing your job, and it would be helpful if there were a better way to see who has made new comments on posts we’ve commented on, or if only user comments and not moderator comments caused a thread to appear in the recent threads.

    • Hi WordTenor !

We aren't required to respond to every question, but we try to fill in any gaps or extra tidbits we think would be helpful. The specific format of the payment payees wasn't mentioned, so I wanted to leave that here for anyone else who stumbles upon this thread.

That being said, we try to get to all threads within 12 hours. This was a bit of a backlog because of the weekend and I was late to the post - sorry about that! I'll try to stay timely!
