College cost

I'm going back to school and was wondering what heading these new expenses should go under: True expenses, Quality of life, make a new category or it really doesn't matter?

  • It really doesn't matter. The budget categories are a way for you to organize your priorities, and there's no need to use the ones that come with the application as a default if it doesn't meet your needs.

  • Groups are very personal choices, so it really doesn't matter. The True Expense group is a bit of a reminder those categories should accumulate and are less desirable to steal from to cover overspending elsewhere.

You can always create a new group later and move categories at that time.

  • For example, I don't even have a True Expenses or Quality of Life category. My categories are all functional. E.g. Food, Savings, Housing, Auto, etc.

Superbone Same here. Housing is a category group because my mortgage is an immediate expense, the house will truly need repairs at some point, and if I don’t save for either of those my Quality of Life will be in the gutter, so to speak.

  • Hey Slate Blue Hammerhead ! Congratulations on going back to school. Exciting times!

The default categories and groups are a starting point. Customize them and make them your own! In our YNAB Help Docs, you can learn how to add and customize your categories.

I'm going to move this over to the Student Life section, and maybe some other students will chime in with ideas!

  • Hi Slate Blue Hammerhead !

How detailed do you want your reports to be? Do you plan to budget for Housing, Tuition and Books separately, or just a single "College costs" category? If you want to separate your expenses, I'd create a "College" category group and include each expense as a separate category. If you just want one "College" category, you could put it in any category group - by default an "Education" category is included in the "Quality of Life" category group.
