Getting Cash Back Again

While on sabbatical I racked up quite a bit of credit card debt. I almost maxed everything out before I just-in-time started to collect a regular paycheck again. One of the casualties of stretching my credit usage was that I stopped using my rewards cards. I wanted to stop racking up additional debt, so it was just easier to switch to debit so I didn't have to figure out whether I'd overspent each month.

Unfortunately that meant no more cash back bonuses, which were nice for (e.g.) buying gifts on Amazon without digging into my cash reserves.

However since I've started using YNAB and linked it to my accounts, it now tracks for me exactly how much money I've spent each month so I know how much I need to pay to prevent my debt from increasing. That means that I can start using my rewards cards again. That means I start collecting cash back on my purchases again. And because of YNAB, I don't have to worry that I'm going to accidentally increase my debt burden.

  • Hi Maroon Rain !

Awareness is definitely a win! Utilizing those rewards is like getting paid for being responsible - great job! :)
