SoFi Money Checking Account

Hello, does YNAB enable direct import with SoFi's new Money Checking account? I can indeed connect to my SoFi investment account, but my checking account does not show up.

    Do you sign in to your Checking account using the same credentials as your Investment account? If so, they should both be available for direct import. Let me know and we'll go from there! :)

    Yes, it is the same login, but only my investment account shows up. Thier checking account service is relatively new, perhaps that is why.

    • Tan Disk Did you add the investment account's connection to YNAB before opening the checking account? If so, maybe try disconnecting the investment account and deleting+re-adding the SoFi connection to YNAB.

      I'm not sure if the connections "refresh" periodically, but I've noticed that when adding a new account to an institution that I've previously connected to YNAB, the new account isn't immediately available as an option.

  • I will try that... I think maybe because it's a beta service perhaps they do not use OFX for their checking accounts yet. I'm just gonna use drag n drop.

    • Tan Disk  If it's a new account, removing and then re-adding the connection (like Resistant Punch Roller mentioned) could pull in that information. However, it's possible import wouldn't be an option until after that account reached production instead of the beta phase. If the drag and drop option gives you any trouble, please let me know!

  • Unfortunately, I don't think SoFi money has export functionalities yet. I have been inputting everything in manually. If you find a way to either import via web or via exported file please update this thread!

  • I don't see anything about "Beta" for SoFi Money now; I opened my account about a month ago. Deleting and re-adding the connection hasn't shown the checking account.

    • Khaki Unicorn (324af65c3529) Sorry for the trouble! It looks like SoFi's Checking account isn't supported for direct import just yet. Tan Disk's suggestion of requesting a sync feature is a great place to star! :)

  • I just tried to import mine and it doesn't seem like YNAB supports it yet.  I know that it's in my feed as another service I use pulls it in just fine.

      When you have a moment, can you suggest the SoFi checking account in the app, if you haven’t already? It adds it to the list of institutions for our Direct Import partner to see about going forward. :)

    • Faness I just suggested SoFi Money using the web app, and emailed SoFi asking if they'll support direct import, or exporting of transaction history at any point. I'm considering switching to them, but this is something I'd miss having.

      I just got out of the SoFi Money queue as well, and put in my request for OFX connection or at least some kind of downloadable transaction record, neither of which is currently supported. Looks like a promising service, though!

      Faness sofi is actually already on the list of providers for YNAB.  It's just not pulling it in properly which is strange.  If there is something else that I can do to nudge it along, I'd love to.  Manual reconciliation will eventually become tiresome; I've gotten so used to the ease of auto loading from the bank!

      Nicole at YNAB By the way, I confirmed that this works fine with Mint.com, so it definitely is technically possible to screen-scrape it. Not sure if this is helpful to pass along to your direct import provider.

  • YNAB is struggling with their direct import to SoFi today but it's being worked on. SoFi works in multiple other services I have, so the issues is on the YNAB import partner side. Good news, is they are actively looking into the solve.

    If you open up a support ticket with YNAB, they can get you in touch with their import partner who is actively working it.

      Faness So, SoFi Money does sync with ynab? It is on the list. I am able to enter in my login info and I get the text message, but then it says we're having trouble connecting, try logging into your financial institution. I removed the connection and re-added it. I would love to get my SoFi Money account synced with ynab. Is there something special that we need to do or is it just new and doesn't work yet?

      Kaitlyn  yes, SoFi syncs great with Ynab. If you are struggling, contact YNAB support. They can help out.

       

      I personally  have my money account and multiple SoFi invest accounts linked with no issues.

      Khaki Unicorn (324af65c3529) I only suggested that if it didn’t work. Originally, I had to work with support to get it to go with the direct import partner.  Maybe they can switch you to the new one if that hasn’t happened for your account yet.

    • Khaki Unicorn (324af65c3529) Since SoFi Money is a newer product from SoFi, some of our Direct Import partners aren't able to support it. For some users, switching to a new Direct Import partner is an option, if their other accounts are supported there. Otherwise, we can work with their existing provider to see what options are available. If you have any questions about that or are having trouble connecting, just let me know!

    • YNAB support was able to finally get it working for me by switching me over to the "new" direct import partner. It still didn't work right off the bat, but a day or two after switching they were able to do some magic and now it works.

  • I opened a SoFi Money account a week ago. It was importing fine, but today and yesterday I woke up to two-factor authentication tokens. YNAB seems to have pinged it (both around 5:35 AM EST) and is no longer connected to sync. Is this a known issue?

      Carey I seem to have a similar with with SoFi Money not only with YNAB but from other providers.  I suspect it has to do with the TFA that SoFi is using and how they tokenize with the direct import providers.  It seems to be about once a month in my experience; depending on the platform (YNAB, Mint, Personal Capital etc...)

      Faness what's happening is every morning around 5:40 I am getting a two-factor token from SoFi.  When I check YNAB after that the SoFi account has disconnected and requests the two-factor authentication. 

       

      It looked OK yesterday because I had already fixed it, but it's happening daily! Is this an issue on YNAB's side or SoFi's?

      Certain financial institutions require you to re-authorize your account frequently, due to how our Direct Import partner's integration works with their site security. Our partner has spent quite a bit of time investigating the issue for us, and I'm afraid there's nothing they can do to get around the frequent re-authorizations. They may start to subside after you've used the connection for a time, but it’s something we’re unable to predict.

      I know it can be a frustrating experience though, and I'm sorry that's the case. The good news is, while it's not so great for the import experience, it's great in terms of security! And you don't need to re-authorize the connection every time it asks—just go through the prompt when you're ready to import new transactions.

    • Nicole It is hooked up, but I get 2-3 texts a day for 2 factor authentication.  Is this something YNAB can fix?

    • Nathan Rucker  Many financial institutions are increasing their security, and we've found having to re-authorize your account is expected behavior. You don't need to reauthenticate the connection every time it asks—just go through the prompt when you're ready to import new transactions. We hope this will improve in the future, but at this time, it's not something we can get around.

  • +1 on an issue with SoFi money.  1-3 times a day, I am reauthenticating my two-factor.

      Sorry for the inconvenience! At the moment, having to reauthenticate that account frequently is expected behavior. This is great for security, but we understand it isn't the best experience for direct import as a whole. We're hopeful this will improve going forward but, for now, you can limit reauthenticating the account to just when you need to import transactions instead of multiple times a day.

    • Dane B You might see those messages when we do our check for new transactions! Those happen every night during a nightly refresh, and again when you log in to the app, if it has been more than 8 hours since your last import.

I am also in the same boat: I am able to start the linking process with my SoFi Money account, and I get a two-factor authentication request, but then I receive a message that reads "We couldn't connect to Social Finance(SoFi)" Can you please help me connect to my SoFi Money account?

      Sorry for the trouble you're having with SoFi! I took a look but I currently don't see a SoFi connection listed in your budget. When you have a moment, can you try reconnect that account? Even if the connection fails, it should still be listed under the Manage Connections option (if you click on your email address in the upper left hand corner of your budget, it's listed there) and then we can troubleshoot. :)

      Faness thank you for getting back to me. When I try to add the connection to under "Manage Connection," I receive the following error after entering in my two-factor authentication code (see the image below). When I tap "Done," no SoFi connection is listed. Any suggestions?

      I'm seeing a strange error on your account. Have you already tried our troubleshooting steps? More specifically, have you tried to “remove” the connection (not the account!) and then re-connect? It's different than using the Disconnect (or Unlink) button, you won't lose any data, and it seems to do the trick for most issues! 

      If you’ve already tried this, or if you get to the end and you still can’t get connected, send a quick reply to let me know. 

      To start, you’ll remove the connection to this financial institution:

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.

      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and close the window.

      Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account (in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon. 

      4. Select Link Account > Add New Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

      If you still aren't able to connect, let me know and we'll go from there! :)

  • It would seem that SoFi utilizes two-factor authentication and there is no way to make the connection from YNAB sticky, therefore I'm having to re-authenticate every day when I check YNAB on mobile. I tap the message to reconnect, I get the text message with the code, and in iOS 12, that number is automatically put above my keyboard, so I just tap it to populate the code. I wish there were some way for YNAB and SoFI to handshake that this connection is OK to keep as approved, much like the browser authentication allows you to "remember this browser". This is not an answer to the problem, but rather what I find to be a slight shortcut to getting reconnected each day, using the iOS app rather than the browser. In case you are using Google Authenticator, 1Password, Authy, or some other two-factor authentication mechanism, you have the option to change that within SoFi if you'd rather switch to SMS authentication.

      Jeff Grosse Thank you for the suggestion. I actually worked with YNAB support to switch my account to their new provider that works better with SoFi. At least I was able to link it to my account! Now I'll see whether that link "sticks"...

      Faness When I try to add the connection, after entering the 2FA code, I receive an error: "We Couldn't Connect to Social Finance(SoFi)". Then I click "Next", and I get prompted to add an unlinked acccount. The SoFi connection doesn't stick in the budget.

  • Sorry for my delay, I was on vacation. This worked great (aside from some duplicate transactions on one of my credit cards, but I went through and cleaned them up manually, and added an adjustment for one I couldn't find). Everything seems to be connected and working great now! Thanks again.

  • Hi - I have had issues with my SoFi accounts for 3+ days now.  The error says I have 'Incorrect Challenges' (which I would assume that I didn't put the verification code at the time that I received it... around 3 am), but then when I click to Troubleshoot, it says 'Maintenance'.  I tried on both the browser and the app.  How long is 'Maintenance' suppose to be?

    • Thanks for letting us know, emc111 ! Maintenance errors usually get cleared up by our import partner automatically, but it can take 48 hours to do so (or 72 if it happens to fall on a weekend).

      It looks like that maintenance error has been hanging around on your connection for longer than I'd expect, so we'll have them look closer! I sent you an email with more details.
