Lock screen Widgets and notifications?

Would be very helpful to be able to see budget info quickly available for reference (e.g. when in-store) on phone lock screen vice having to open the app.   Would help to keep me on budget in the purchasing moment.

And app notifications when new transactions are ready for import.

  • Hey  Zephyr Mays , thanks for both of those feature requests! I'm definitely going to get this in front of our team so they can review it.

But while I have you, I'd love some more thoughts on this. Would you want more than a badge app notification about new transactions? For example, would you want a notification banner? lock screen? If you spend regularly from a connected account, this would happen about once a day at a very similar time of day (ie. mornings, evenings).

Oh, and I'm going to move this over to our App Functions category so you can get more interaction!

Dan at YNAB I've been thinking about this as well. I would love to have a widget that displays the available budget of certain categories (including To Be Budgeted). I could for example have a category "groceries" for which I could create a widget on my wife's and my smart phone to see exactly how much money there is left for the next grocery shopping. That way we wouldn't have to open the YNAB app every time.

    • Orange Disk So would this be like a Notification Screen widget?  I'll send that off to the team as well. Thanks!

Yeah, why not... I mean, both, like, all of that would be great. To have a widget for the lock screen, the notification screen and the launcher to immediately see the available budget in a selected category. Particularly the launcher widget though. Not too big, maybe 2x1 max (resizable) to be able to add multiple widgets for multiple categories to the same launcher page.

Hi there! I would definitely want to see some form of notifications that would remind you to budget weekly or remind you that you have on the lock screen and as banners! It may also be cool to see a widget (I have iOS) that could show frequented budget categories based on the location? So when I go to the grocery store I can quick glance that category without even opening my phone. Just a throught

  • I concur with  T Kelly - anything which helps you make good decisions in the heat of battle in the store buying groceries!  This will also help keep my household on track since the Home Admiral and I both share shopping responsibilities, but generally only one of us tracks the spending.

Anything which removes barriers to budget info and makes it easier to conveniently access.

Quick access to a few user-selected budget categories on a lock screen widget would be fantastic.  Also, standard notifications to visit YNAB and update the budget as well as when transactions are ready for import would be great.

Lastly, for those of us with Apple Watches, I appreciate the current ability to view my budget categories,  but it needs more.  Specifically, the ability to select (and manually order) only preferred categories and a watchOS complication for a single selected category (e.g. what's my grocery budget look like at a glance when I'm shopping).

What are your thoughts on these ideas?

Dan at YNAB any thoughts on the above?

    • Zephyr Mays All of that sounds fantastic and would help in giving you increased awareness and reducing impulse spending or overspending! Complete agreement there!

The question isn't whether or not it's a great idea. It is! 😀 But the question is always: among all the great ideas, which one is the most important right now and how can we make the YNAB Method shine the brightest? So I've mentioned your original feedback to our team and you'll begin to see marked improvements as we continue to roll out great new features (most of which we get for you guys!). Thank you!!

  • Lock screen notification of new transactions with payee, and optionally transaction amount, would be great! I just had some fraudulent charges to my checking account and I would have noticed sooner had I been getting lock screen push notifications. Thanks!

  • Don't forget about android! =D My 2cents on the matter... I'm on board for the adding of transactions on a widget. That'll make it soooooo much easier and faster to cross that hurdle of a tiny habit called transaction logging.

Aquamarine Mare Yes! Android's widget support is much more robust than iOS and i think we're missing a great opportunity here. Literally would make the ynab widget my home screen.

  • +1 on Not forgetting Android. I like the home screen widget with a category and its Available balance. Don't want any kind of money amounts showing on the lock screen as that seems like a very bad security idea.

  • I too would love to see an iOS Widget so that I can see the current balances of the categories I select.

    • Hi Ken Adams !

Thanks for chiming in here! Since this idea was posted we've changed how we collect feature requests. If you fill out the Feature Request form, it goes directly to our development team to let them know what you'd like to see moving forward! :)

  • I'm surprised this isnt a feature yet! Most other budget apps have a widget. I know this to be true because I've tried them all (but don't worry, I always come back to YNAB because it's the best!)

At a minimum a simple clock-style widget for the homescreen with total budget or even user-selected budget categories that provide a quick visual representation of the budget would be insanely helpful! I look forward to whatever widget your team decides is most viable!

We're happy you always come back! :)

Currently, we don't have a widget, but a number of users have told us the Allowance app at Works with YNAB, has a widget option that they enjoy!

Faness unfortunately that only covers the uses on iOS. Us android users are still left a little wanting.

    • Hi Lavender Viper !

Yes, there are currently push notifications available for iOS! :)

From the Settings app, notifications can be turned off entirely. More granular controls—such as disabling the Badge App Icon—are also available.

1 — Launch the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

      2 — Tap Notifications.

      3 — Tap on YNAB.

4 — Toggle the Allow Notifications

Give that a try and let us know if it gives you any trouble!

  • Very glad I found this thread. The "Today Screen Widget" from the Allowance App is a critical piece to the adoption puzzle. By adding the widget to the today screen I can easily check "do I have the budget for this purchase" before getting too invested in wanting it.  I was a little surprised it was not part of the YNAB iOS app to be honest. Not that opening the app and finding the right category is a huge hassle by any stretch but when I am strolling around an electronics store  dazzled by all the shiny new tech a simple swipe right to see a red zero for "tech toys" snaps be back to my budgeting mindset very quickly. Its like snapping a rubber band against your wrist to break a bad habit. Sure you could pull out a pocket notebook+pencil and write I will not bite my nails 100 times but snapping a rubber band against your wrist is probably just as effective and a lot less setup. The less effort it takes to check before I spend the more likely I am to actually do it each and every time.

Love YNAB by the way! Thanks!

    • Hi Gold Filly ! We're so glad that you're enjoying the app.

If you'd like to see a similar feature added to YNAB, would you mind letting our product team know by submitting a Feature Request? That helps our team keep track of each & every one, so we can plan for What’s Up Next.

For a quick tip, you can pin categories to the top of your budget for easy access within the mobile app! Less scrolling. On the Budget screen, tap a category and select Details. Then tap the Pin at the top right.
