Fresh Start and App Syncing

I am realllly trying to stick to YNAB consistently and stop with the fresh starts. But alas I had to do one today. I did it on the desktop version and the budget synced to the app, but it is still showing all of these old transactions that need to be categorized. How do I get rid of that?  Thanks!

  • Um also this is my first time posting. Does YNAB give you nicknames? Have no idea where Lavender Koala came from. LOL.

  • Hi Lavender Koala (at least for the time being 😆) !

(To edit your name on the forum, login and click your current name on the top right to select Edit Profile. Change your name and click Save at the bottom.

To change your username (yes, they are two seperate things!), click your name on the top right of the forum and select Edit Profile, then Account. Edit your username and click OK to save. 😊)

First, don't worry about all those fresh starts! Every experience you have, makes you a better budgeter! It's not giving up, it's moving forward (why spend all that brain power looking behind?!).

However, have you identified a specific reason why or a place where you get stuck, so you feel the need to make a fresh start? If it's always the same spot, let me know! I would love to try to work through that!

As for those mysterious transactions, the first thing to do is double check you're logged into the same account on both the web and mobile apps. Now, are you seeing the same exact budget name in both? And are you looking at the same budget month on web and mobile? Also, are those old transactions showing up in the web app too?  We'll figure this out! 😊

  • It’s only on the app. And I have this thing about seeing notifications on my iPhone app. Drives me nuts.

Lavender Koala I'm the same way! Those little red badge icons, right? I get the shivers when I see a phone with 3,234 unread emails and red icons scattered across the rest of the apps 😱

If you're only seeing it on the app, can you try to uninstall/reinstall it?

    • Jannelle at YNAB tried that. Still there. Can I just delete the ones that happened before my fresh start?

    • Lavender Koala I ended up doing a fresh start from the app instead of desktop and that worked. Not getting behind again!

  • How did you get a fresh start on the app?  I did fresh start on my laptop and it's not syncing with the app.  Now I'm behind and can't seem to get things to work.

    • Hi Tracye with an e !

I know you figured this out already. Nice detective work! I thought I'd include the steps, for others that might stumble across this post.

After making a Fresh Start, a copy of your budget is created. You'll want to check that you're looking at the same budget in the web app and mobile app. Tap on the gear icon to see the name of your current budget. The copy has (Archived on Date) in the budget name.

To switch budgets in the mobile app:

      1. Tap the Settings icon in the lower right.
      2. Tap on “Open Budget”
      3. Tap the name of the budget you want to open.

Let us know if you have any other questions!
