Income designation

I have a small business and have sales transactions that I need to record as income.

when i look at the income v expenses- there is nothing for income- even though i have all my income uploaded. What am I doing wrong where it's not showing up as income? How do I designate income as income?

  • Hi Pink Mask !

To have that income show as income, categorize it as Inflow: To Be Budgeted. If you want it to have it's own line on the Income vs. Expense report, update the payee to something that doesn't match your income that's already listed - such as "Small Business Income". :)

We also have a number of small business articles, so I'll leave a few below in case you want to take a look!

Faness   Is there a way to list the income inflow transactions. Frustrating that I can see the Inflow total, but no way to see all the Inflow transactions. Why does Ynab NOT treat inflow like any other transaction and let users click to display the transactions. Have I missed something simple?

    • Hi JBCampo !

I'm not sure I fully understand what you mean. Are you trying to view the income transactions in the Income vs. Expense report? If so, clicking on the total amount in the report will give you a list of the transactions used to get to that amount.

If that's not what you were referring to, let me know and I'll try again! :)

Faness  No, but ah ha, that gives me what I want. On the Budget page, right side column, there is Total Inflows, but when you click it, I'd expect to see the individual inflows. Nope. When I click To Be Budgeted on the same Budget page, it says Cover this overbudgeting with... because I've budgeted more than I currently have. I find no way from the Budget page to display my Income/Inflow transactions. I can see all my expense transactions, but I find no way to get a list of my Income/Inflow transactions.

Can I find the Income/Inflow transactions from the Budget page or must I go to the Reports page?

Sorry my question was unclear. tks yr help.

JBCampo Hi, I'd say the best to see your transactions is to go to the All Accounts page. Then search for Inflow. And make sure you have disabled filters on reconciled transactions so you can see everything.

Ceeses  Thanks. That works too. IDK but I think that for ease-of-use, you are on the Budget page with access to all your category transactions, but no access to your Inflow/Income transactions. That seems like a gap to me.  A user would naturally think that since he can see all the expenses for his accounts, he would be able to see the discrete inflow too. Anyhow, thanks.

JBCampo  - I agree with you about being able to click and see a list of transactions that make up your income sources in each month. YNAB4 has this, and the lack of it in nYNAB was one of the (minor) reasons that I chose not to switch over. I use this feature often; it's quick and easy - a simple click, rather than running a report or doing a search in All Accounts.  Not sure why they eliminated it in nYNAB.

VanillaCottage Thanks VC. I loved YNAB4 but felt I needed to move to the nYNAB or get left behind. Hopefully their Dev team considers adding back some of the much used stuff that someone decided to remove. Like for example, the Check # column (they say just write the check number in Memo.) Or the ability to reconcile to a specific date. Or now this annoyance of having to jump thru additional hoops to just show my income inflow. Overall though, I like the nYNAB. I understand it's a business decision. Selling single subscriptions just doesn't bring in enuf money. They need an annual-based model, which I'm ok with, provided they add improvements. That's the general software model.

    • JBCampo Thank you for further explaining and sorry I missed your question the first time! Currently, there isn't an option to see inflow transactions on the budget page - you can run a report or filter transactions in All Accounts, like mentioned above, but I know that's not exactly what you're looking for here.

If you wouldn't mind, we'd love for you to submit a Feature Request! That form goes directly to our development team to let them know what you'd like to see going forward. This will at least put that income view on their radar! :)
