No transactions importing

Is anyone else having this issue? YNAB says that all my banks are connected, but NOTHING is importing. This is 3 different banks, multiple accounts per bank, and NO TRANSACTIONS. None. In WEEKS.

YNAB, I'm trying, I love the method, but I can't do 100% manual, it gets out of hand. I need this to work at least 50% of the time. I've gone back and forth with your support team multiple times for at least 5 days each time, and IT NEVER GETS FIXED. WTF?

  • Hi starlady09 !

Oh no! Hmm, that certainly doesn't sound like there is just a delay with your transactions importing, and since your connections look good, there must be something going on in the integration!

To investigate this further, we'll need some transaction examples and specific accounts to report to our Direct Import partner! I don't want you to post all of that here, so I'm going to reach out via email!

Thanks for hanging in there with us. :) We will figure this out!

    • Jannelle  Hi Jannelle, could you help me out too? My BoA account hasn't imported since October, but has 'refreshed' 19 minutes ago. I can provide example charges like you asked others above too.

Edit: Nevermind, I just unlinked and relinked the account and it's back to normal without losing any data (thank goodness!)

  • I am having the same issue.  I signed up for YNAB about 10 days ago and the direct import is not working.  Accounts are connected.  As I use my debit card for all my purchases, I can't add transaction manually or spend the time importing manually; the direct import was the main reason I opted for YNAB as opposed to TOSHL or some other financial app.

I now cannot even download and import my transactions through my bank so I have no way to enter my transactions without 100% manual entry. Did you all ever get your issues taken care of? I want so badly to like YNAB as it was fantastic the first 9 months I used it but the past 3 have been a complete nightmare.

We answered this question for the initial poster, so we marked it as Answered. However, you can still post on Answered threads if you're having a similar issue!

I took a look and our Direct Import partner responded to us recently in regards to your account connections. They need more information so I sent you a message with what they've requested. Hopefully, we'll see some true momentum once we give them that information!

    • Faness  You 'answered' it but it obviously isn't 'fixed'. That is Violet Yearling's point. That's why with the cable company I never say the problem is fixed because more often than not, it rears its ugly head again. So, what is being done to fix this issue? I'm still in my trial period and debating signing up since this has been going on since April!!!

This issue was "Fixed" for the original poster. :)

If you're running into a similar issue, please let me know the financial institution you're having trouble importing from and I'll take a look at things! Issues like these take place within individual account connections and often have to be investigated by our Direct Import partner if it's not a wide spread issue (you can check our status page to see if the issue you're experiencing is wide spread).

  • Honestly,

i use this and a different budgeting tool and I was REALLY hoping that YNAB would be better at this, but if there is one flaw with this program; it’s the importing. Which, quite frankly is huge. I am Canadian and it is missing A LOT of transactions. I won’t buy the subscription unless this can be rectified and be more seamless. The other app I use does way better at this; however they don’t have the same theory and education.

YNAB - get this fixed and you have me.

I took a look and you don't have any transactions to import just yet. When you get started with YNAB, only your Starting Balance will import. Going forward, new transactions will import within 12 hours of clearing your bank. Since you just added those accounts, give them a day or two and let us know if you still aren't seeing transactions! :)

    • Faness  You need to learn to read the emails in the thread and this thread before jumping in. Janelle sent me a link to a video on how to set up EZCardInfo which is exactly what I have been doing and get to a dead stop with a self-chosen security question it won't except any of my possible answers. Doesn't this sound familiar? It should since it's exactly what you and I have been going around with SEFCU CC and EZCardInfo from the beginning.

    • Purple Kat I did read the emails, forgive me if I missed one. In the email thread you mentioned that the SEFCU card was provided by EZCard. I see a successful connection through SEFCU but an error through EZCard. If you're able to connect through SEFCU, it's better to continue using that connection rather than EZCard.

As for the transactions, do you currently have transactions that are not importing? Our records show transactions were last imported from SEFCU on 9/24. If you're able to connect through SEFCU and transactions are importing through the SEFCU connection, there's no need to try to add the account through the EZCard option.

  • Hi, I am new user and just started using YNAB for budgeting earlier this week. none of my CC accounts have downloaded any transactions yet. The checking account shows transactions from few days ago and I know there are cleared transactions from yesterday as it downloaded them to my Quicken. Nothing has updated today at all.
I am trying YNAB but this major issue seems to go while back .  As a company it seems like YNAB is ignoring the users and putting off this issue with BS troubleshooting method. There is no error or logs to show what is going on. It simply says, there is nothing to download, when I know there is transactions ready to download.
If I have to go look somewhere else for my daily balance, whats the point of paying for this app. I could just stick to Quicken I guess.

    • Hi Magenta Flute !

We do use a different Direct Import partner than Quicken. We're also on a less frequent import schedule than them. We check for transactions once every morning and when you access the app if we haven't imported within the last 8 hours. Quicken may import transactions before they've cleared your bank, but YNAB only imports transactions after that point.

Awareness of spending is a big part of why YNAB works and we're totally unique in that our method leans more heavily on active engagement. That means entering transactions as you spend plays a big role in that.

Using that in conjunction with direct import (for filling in where you may have missed), is what we had in mind when we introduced the feature. We expect there to be a delay but manual entry is meant to prevent that pain point.

    • Orchid Zebra I took a look and I'm seeing errors on both of those account connections. When you have a moment, can you try resetting those connections?

To start, you’ll remove the connection to this financial institution:

      1. Select your budget name in the top left-hand corner and choose Manage Connections from the drop-down menu.

      2. Then Remove the connection(s) to this financial institution, confirm removal and close the window.

Then you’ll reconnect your account(s) to a fresh connection:

      3. Hover over the existing account (in the left sidebar) and click on the edit icon.

      4. Select Link Account > Add New Connection. Search for the financial institution, and follow the prompts.

If that doesn't do the trick, let me know and I'll reach out via email with next possible steps! :)

    • Hi Blue Cello !

This thread is a little misleading because it's such a various compilation of bank issues - overall, import is working for most banks (we keep tabs on the ones that aren't working on our status page).

We encourage YNABers to start from today and not look back, so when you set up an account it will start with today's date.

After linking an account, if you decide to import past transactions (since the first of the month, for example) you can change the date of the starting balance transaction. You will also need to adjust the amount of the starting balance.

Direct Import will only provide historical transactions for a couple of months in the past, at most. If you need additional history, you might consider our File-Based Importing option.

Let me know if you have any other questions, I'm happy to help! :)

    • Hi ynewbie !

I took a look at your account and everything appears to be up and running! :)

When you first start a budget, only your starting balance imports. Going forward, new transactions will import within 8 hours of clearing your bank. However, some banks don't clear transactions on the weekends - so a Saturday transaction wouldn't clear until Monday and it wouldn't import until late Monday or Tuesday.

Since you just started your budget, give it a few days and those transactions should start to trickle in. :)

Orange Moose Not sure if making this reply is the best bet but it's always been true. YNAB expects you to do manual entry or file import and direct import is meant to be a backup in case you forget to enter something. Wholly relying on it sounds like a recipe for disappointment.

Have been implementing, to varying degrees of success, Ramit Sethi's automated personal finance system to the best of my ability where the whole philosophy is to work *with* human nature and not against it (aka automate everything and monitor not manually manage it because in reality taking the human element out of it makes the behaviour you want to do and follow become automatic). His newest 10th anniversary book mentions a preference for YNAB over mint, so as I can't make heads or tails of the mint budgeting system, I decided to try this. Really really need the automatic tracking and expense import to work else this is not true to the philosophy of the automated system. This thread is one year old and consistent updates with new and different users struggling to get the import to work well. Please advise. Thank you, -M-

Welcome to YNAB and to the forum - we're happy you're here! :)

I took a look and I see you wrote into support and received a few details. I want to be clear that YNAB does not work like Mint. We use a different Direct Import partner than Mint and we're also on a less frequent import schedule than them.

    • Hi Tan Clarinet ! If a third-party data aggregator (like the company we use to bring in transactions) makes too many attempts to sync with your bank, it could cause you to get locked out of your account. That's a big reason for the schedule! Some financial institutions also ask that we limit those requests.

The most foolproof way to maintain a healthy budget is by entering transactions as you go. The best part about entering transactions yourself is your budget will be up to date immediately without having to rely on a third party, like a data provider.

This brings an even greater awareness of the financial choices you're making and how they align with your priorities. From our experience, this is one of the biggest contributing factors to people’s success with YNAB!
