Setting up a child with own budget?
I guess this is more of a feature request , and curious what other people are doing.
I created a second ynab budget in my account for my 13 year old daughter to use on her own. I made it a requirement for her before getting her own debit card.
I don't think its worth it to pay for a second subscription just for her, (she only has about 1 or 2 transactions a month.). but i'd also rather not give her access to my full budget either where she can see all my transactions, income, etc... or mess them up. (although unlikely)
It would be nice if I could force YNAB to ask for my password again if trying to switch to my main budget, that way it would be off limits.. or ideally set different passwords for each budget... (My son will be getting his own in another year and then i'll have 2 child accounts)
I would like this feature as well. I have kids of varying ages who are tech-literate/glued to their devices so if it's easy & accessible, there's a greater chance they'll use it.
Since YNAB has worked for me, I wanted to instill good budgeting habits now, while they're young -- and give them their own budget... Except I don't want them messing with mine! LOL
For my oldest (who's about to move out on his own), he was using my old YNAB4+Dropbox but now that he has issues with accessing it via his phone, he has stopped using it altogether -- which is too bad. He has decided to go the trades route instead of college, so he doesn't qualify for a free YNAB.
My middle schooler has an account and debit card of her own so she can make her own choices in savings/spending. I think having a YNAB budget for her would help her learn good money habits as well, but she doesn't have a school email so no free YNAB for her either.
I misspoke, actually I have now done the research. Here is what is needed for a student account and ther length.
"We offer all students YNAB free for 12-months (in addition to the free 34-day trial). If you’re interested, write into [email protected] with proof of enrollment—think student ID card, transcript or tuition statement (but anything that shows you are currently enrolled and includes your name, your school, and the date will do). We can’t wait to get you budgeting!"
I guess it's better than nothing, but that's only 1 free year... my kids are still teenagers and won't be adults for a few more years. i would think a simple solution would be just to allow each budget to have it's own password to access it... (different from the master account). Hopefully we can get them to pick it up as a feature request.
