Budget and Bank Accounts Don't Match

So I'm having an issue when I add my "Total Available" + my "To Be Budgeted" it is not matching up with the amount I have in my bank accounts. I have $23.00 more in my bank accounts than in my YNAB. What am I doing wrong?

I suspect it has something to do with the fact that I have a checking account and a savings account that I regularly transfer from one another.  It could also be that I am transferring 87 from one account that is not in my YNAB to one that is. maybe? Really have no idea.

I have no idea how my account balances in YNAB are perfect but the budget is under by 23.

  • Do you have any money budgeted in future months? That won't show up as Available in the current month.

We'd be more than happy to take a closer look at things! If you’re up for it, go ahead and enable Support Access for your account. Once you’ve done that, let me know—and mention whether you’d like to continue the discussion here or via email instead.

    • Faness  Hey there, I enabled support access to my account.  I think my error may have come from adding up the balance in my accounts and forgetting about money "in between" accounts possibly? I might feel better if you checked it out though. I think email is probably better. Thank you.

    • Beige Grizzly Thanks for enabling access! Nicole sent you a quick video on what she found. Take a look at that video and you can either respond there or here with any other questions. :)

  • We understand that it's important to be able to trust your budget, so here's how you can verify that the amount in your account(s) matches exactly with your budget in YNAB – no more and no less.

As Mamster mentioned, you'll want to include the amount Budgeted in Future when tallying up the amounts To Be Budgeted and Total Available - that should equal the amounts you have in your bank accounts.

If things still aren't adding up, let me know and we can take a closer look! :)

    • Faness Hi. I followed the advice here but the amounts aren't adding up. Any thoughts on what I can do to find the error?

    • Hi Turquoise Dragon !

Let's have you go ahead and reconcile your accounts. While you do,  here are a few things to look out for,  that could be throwing off your balance in YNAB:

      • missing transactions that need to be entered
      • an incorrect starting balance
      • transactions that are cleared at the bank that don't have the green "C" in YNAB
      • inverted numbers (entering $20.54 instead of $20.45)
      • entering a transaction as outflow instead of an inflow

Check for any of these between now and the last time you reconciled and let me know how it goes!

  • Thanks for posting suggestions, they kind of worked for me, but I'm still confused because my bank & my budget we're waaay off and I've been trying to calculate my budget for 4 days.

    Anybody with similar experiences ?

    • Hi Alan !

When you say they're way off, do you mean the balances? If so, you'll need to reconcile the account. If you go line-by-line, transaction-by-transaction, you can find the differences between the account in YNAB and the actual account. Once you've found the discrepancies, you can adjust them to get your account back in line. :)

      Hey Faness  !

Yes. The balance on my checking account was off by 1k. I ended up reconciling the accounts and tried to go line by line but couldn't find the transactions that made it go crazy.

Something very positive I got out of this is that I detected fraud on my acct. right away.

My accnt. is reconciled with a manual adjustment and I'll just keep moving fwd.  Thanks for the support !

Yikes! I'm happy that you were able to track it down and report it to your bank quickly! Let us know if we can help with anything else.

  • I am a newb and I was shocked at how totally out of whack they were.  I reset my budget and will be diligent in my reconciliation going forward.

      Hey  Coral Boat ,

I've been through the free trial, then subscribed and still trying to be very careful of my account being in parity and I haven't been able to. I reconciled my accnt. successfullly by adding manual transaction, but then after 2 days, it was off again. Still learning.

Alan Are you only clearing items that have actually cleared your account?

I'm pretty sure I have. I have the Bank connection and that will only show the ones that are already cleared by my bank.
