2019: The Official Savings Challenge
Happy new year, everyone, and welcome to the 2019 YNAB savings challenge!
All are very welcome to join in, no matter the size of your goals or savings purpose. Claim your line on the spreadsheet and then post your goal to this thread, then check in every month to update your progress on the spreadsheet and the thread. If you have a journal, you can also link this on the spreadsheet.
2019 Savings Challenge Spreadsheet
A special thanks to @Budget_Ninja for creating the spreadsheet and to speaking_of_art who is taking a second year as steward of the spreadsheet.
The 2018 savings challenge total is not yet completed, and there will be people still posting their final updates in early January, but I can see that as a group YNABers from both forums saved in excess of $760,000 (US $). That is outstanding!
Let the 2019 saving begin.

Thanks for putting this up so fast! So I reviewed my goals from last year, and I was able to go over my $10,000 goal and got to over $11,000! With that in mind and more income this year, I'm setting an overall goal of: $14,000
This will be split into a few goals:- 529 Plan Deposits
- Non 529 Grad School Saving
- Rainy Day Fund (up from 4 months to 6 months)
- Summer fund (for the two months I don't draw income as a teacher)
- Pet Fund
- New Car Down PaymentLike last year, I will NOT include retirement pulled from paycheck, or vacation savings. Let's do this! Let us get this bread!

I am closing on a house this month (first-time homeowner)! So I will need to have a decent sized home maintenance fund. I have 2k of my "moving money" set aside for maintance already (possibly more depending on how some other expenses work out--those might get targeted to some specific projects) and I want to save up at least 4k more this year. The goal is to end the year at 6k, even if I have to use some funds this year. My budget will be changing a lot as I make this transition, so I'm hoping this challenge, as well as being more active on the support forum, will help keep me on track!

I'm currently paying off debt, but also want to make sure I have some good emergency savings rebuilt. I'm so thankful I had an EF this year for when some life emergencies came this December, because I didn't take on any debt!. Now it's time to rebuild and add. So this year, it's modest, achievable savings for me while I knock out my debt!
Modest goal: $6,000
Stretch goal that would delight me, come 12/31/2019: $8,000 -
I know this is going to sound ridiculous but my OCD is coming out. Can someone help with the formatting of my line. #67 (#62 on ID column). I want dark red #2 background and white lettering. The whole row is formatting correctly except for my user name column. I've tried it on 2 different computers. I'm about to pull my hair out.
Our savings goal is to finish up our EF by the way. $6,196.61.

I have claimed a line on the spreadsheet. My big goals are:
- to fully fund my 3 month buffer $5,222.98/$10,000
- increase my retirement contributions to 15%,
- begin saving $1000 for my son's graduation
- and to fully fund Christmas $2,100
I'm being granular about Christmas this year as last years fund (saved in 6 months) came up short because it was stretched between gifts, decor and food. This years total goal is more than double last years at $2,100.
This is my first time in the savings challenge and I'm excited to be on board!

I'm in and have claimed line 74. This is my first year doing the saving challenge. Last year I did the Debt Smackdown challenge for the first time and really appreciated the checkins and community. I am still working on paying off debt, but noticed last year that it would have helped me to have savings on hand instead of increasing the amount owed on credit cards :/ My goal for 2019 is to save $3,000 for emergency fund (is there a better name for this? for some reason having an "emergency" fund stresses me out even though it's a good thing) and $750 for the holiday season - Nov - Jan, for a grand total of $3,750. Reaching this goal will rely heavily on tax refund and work bonus this Feb/Mar. No matter how the spring shakes out, I will do my best to reach my savings goal.

Hi everyone!
On last year's challenge I enjoyed having 3 specific targets. My specific goals for this year's savings:
$1275 to top off my Emergency Fund
$2000 for an anniversary vacation with my husband in 2020 (for my portion)
$500 for miscellaneous moving costs when we inevitably need to move at some point in the near future
Total of $3775 for these 3 goals.
best wishes to everyone joining the challenge.
**I should add: the first month of the year I will be contributing less to these goals, as I still want to finish off 2 of the goals from last year**

$2,287.60
That's the total amount of the car payments that I will no longer be making after my car is paid off in February. Hopefully I'll be coming back to edit this post with additional savings due to more income before too long, but for now, I'm committing to putting $228.76/mo toward my true expenses/sinking funds, not debt or routine spending.
