End of month question - removing money that isn't there?

Hoping this is a quick one to solve.

I started using YNAB last month,  i had a few problems but managed to get those sorted.

I now, however, have an issue where about £5 was left showing in my available money which it wants. This is likely due to a mistake somewhere else.

What I have done for now to remove this £5 from the budget page so it doesn't look like I have more than actually do, was set up a new category and i budgeted the £5 there.

but is there a way to remove this altogether. I tried zeroing that category but then this puts the £5 back into to be budgeted.

the only other thing i can think of is completing a fake transaction for that amount.

  • The Budget is the sum of all of your money in your accounts. You don't have extra. It's just in the "wrong" place.

  • If your account balances agree with the real world, it's real money. Give it a job like all the rest of your money.

  • Hi know this money is not there. Its likely there from something that went wrong but now it does not equal with my actual account funds. This is why it's in it's own category because it doesn't exist. So it needs to be gone put not place into any accounts or to be budgeted or catagories as it not there.

Asoe209 Compare the "cleared" balance for each account you have in YNAB with the "cleared" or "statement" balance at the respective bank. Do those numbers match?

Asoe209 As I said the money in your budgets is just another way of looking at the money in your accounts. You need to fix your accounts before you can "fix" the budget.

  • Have you been reconciling your account in YNAB with your account in your bank? If they don't match, and you can't find the error, YNAB will create an adjustment transaction for you. If you don't know how to reconcile, here's a tutorial.

  • Thanks, I did once but I noticed the error after the fact thats why I just put it in another cat.

I'll try that to remove it instead.

    • Asoe209 It's important that your account balances in YNAB match your real life, cleared accounts by making sure the transaction data matches. Reconciling will help there! Make sure to check out the short video too. 🙂 Let us know if you have any questions along the way!

  • What happens if my real lift accounts match whats in YNAB, but that £5.11 is still sitting in the to be budgeted section.

I ask because when you reconsile it asks it the account are correct which they are?
