New Forum Feature Request Form

Say that 10x fast 😅

We are implementing a brand new feature request form in our forum today. It will walk you through a few more detailed questions than the previous version, will connect your feature request with your YNAB account, and you will receive a response from our team via email.

The old form went directly to our product team and you never heard back that we had received it, which was understandably frustrating for YNABers. This form will pass through our support team who will reach out with any clarifying questions or to give you more insight into where that feature currently stands. Of course, all requests will still end up with our product team, but we're excited about the extra level of communication.

While we won't be initiating a public voting system on this forum, please know that submitting a feature request through the form is our internal voting system that links up with the rest of the YNAB community that may not be present here.

As always, feel free to ask questions about this form here or reach out to me via private message if you'd prefer.

So you're going to use the feature request count as a voting machine instead?

Why would we waste our time with a "me too" feature request if someone else already made the request and posted about it here?

    • Hi nolesrule !

We ask that every user submit a feature request for options they'd like to see brought to YNAB. While the basis might be the same (ie. new goals) the details may be different (such as saving goals, spending goals, credit card goals, etc.) and we want to see as many perspectives as we can.

Also, feature requests aren't monitored on the forum. So, while it's nice to discuss the different possibilities, they're brought to our product team through way of the feature request form.

  • I'm really disappointed in the lack of a voting system. There are probably great ideas that other people have submitted and I'd love to have, but that doesn't mean I'll think of them independently. It's also a giant waste of our time to have each person type out an idea rather than clicking to vote - and a waste of time for your staff to reply to each submission. Besides the fact that it would add transparency to the process, especially if you indicated the status of each request. If you want additional perspectives, allow comments under the initial feature request. Most people won't bother (or don't know how) to submit feature requests - all you're doing is adding obstacles to hearing from users.

All of this would be better for users - not sure why this isn't already in place. What's frustrating is having no visibility into what is going on from a development standpoint, or any communication about how/why decisions are made. I submitted a request over a year ago, and I have no idea what the status is. I understand that not every request will be accepted or added to YNAB, but apparently I need to resubmit every so often just to (maybe) get a hint at what's going on? Not very friendly.

    • Hi mr_pibb !

Currently, the forum doesn't make up a large portion of our communication with YNABers. While the conversations here are more vocal and on a public level, we hear more from YNABers via email and directly through the app. The Feature Request form allows us to include our forum users and make sure their opinions reach the right place.

We share what our development team is focusing on through our What’s Up Next page and we're working on being more transparent with future plans. If there's a specific feature you'd like an update on that's not listed, we'd be more than happy to check for you but it's most likely not on the road map - at least, not yet. ;)

    • Faness I would really like to see where the requests are coming from and how they are prioritized, since "What's next" and the last "Release notes" don't show a single feature that I would slight consider, in the least, important.

As someone who works in software development, I fully support this. "Me too" requests don't just mean "me too"....all too often they mean "me too, but with a twist". Tracking all of these individual differences as part of the same request leads to giant, bloated tickets where there are so many voices (some contradictory) that you can't be sure what the "real" request is. Tracking them separately lets the developers compare and contrast while keeping their identities intact.

Gray Admiral Often the users do a better job of hashing out the best way to handle twists through discussion than internal siloing, which often results in the final deliverable turning out to be no good for everyone (Stealing From the Future fix beta anyone?)

  • So where do you have a link to the new feature request on your website?  I can't find it anywhere but here.  Also the Send Feedback form?  I found it somewhere - likely another forum post but can't find it again.

onojane I found it on the forum home page, but does this replace the Send Feedback form?

    • Hi onojane ! The new form is built especially for the forum. We also receive feature requests via the app, or email . You can find the new form here, or in the sidebar under Important Links:

    • onojane This does replace the Google Form. Though it will remain active, and able to receive requests while we transition.

  • I'm in the voting camp.  If you don't want just a "me too" response, just require more info to be provided along with the vote.
