BUDGET TEMPLATE!! YES , it works!

I was having such a hard time understanding YNAB, because it is so unlike any other method of budgeting. I finally tried a Budget Template, because I needed to see how far off my spending "wants" are from my spending income.  That was the best thing I did!

I recommend it to anyone who is just starting YNAB, because it is closer to our "usual" way of thinking about our money. Once I understood the categories that needed more funding (or less funding!), I have been able to make it work.

  • Do you use the toolkit for YNAB , Magenta Foal ?  If not, I think you would might investigate it as something that would enhance the display and experience for you.  The tool kit creates a goal column to the left of the budgeted column.  I love seeing all my template numbers on the screen.  The toolkit is a free Chrome extension created by a team of YNAB enthusiasts.  Link to the thread about the toolkit here: Chrome toolkit for YNAB

    • HappyDance Thanks for the suggestion! I cannot figure out how to make it work. I have downloaded it, and reset YNAB, but I am not seeing any of the items you mentioned.

Here's a display of what I have using the toolkit:

The tool kit gives me a goal column. I have the goal amount displayed along with the type of goal it is (monthly, target, one that isn't in this display is one identified as a D which means a target by date goal, the U means the category has upcoming scheduled transactions.  I also have the total of scheduled transactions appearing in muted grey to the left of my activity column. I love this one. It helps ensure I don't accidentally move funds from the wrong categories when covering an overspend.

If this display appeals to you, here's what to look for in the toolkit. Open the toolkit:

click on the budget screen option (left hand column when you open the tool kit) this will load the options that affect the budget screen for you to select from.

look for these various options that activate different elements on the tool kit to customize your display

Personally, I didn't find pacing to be useful. I don't need to know the percentage of spending by category, but it exists, and you might like it.

After you've made changes, click the save button. It will remind you to refresh your budget display to activate your recent changes.  Take a look at the budget, decide if you like them or not. Go back to the tool kit to make any revisions or remove features you don't like.

      Have fun!

    • HappyDance May I ask for your help? I've enabled "Display Total Monthly Goals" in the toolkit, but the goal amounts still don't show up in my budget, even after refreshing and signing out and back in again (see screenshots below). Do you have any idea what the issue could be?

    • Sea Green Sidewinder Do you have a goal set up in YNAB? If not, there is nothing for this to pull.

    • Cornflower Blue Flute Obviously, as indicated by the letters showing the types of goals per category. ;-)

I think the feature that displays the goal amount is one of the pics I posted.  It's nearer the bottom on the budget screen option page. I think it reads:

Display Target Goal Amount and Overbudget Warning

I'm not sure about which option to select in the pull down menu.  I can't double check that because Chrome extensions are disabled on my work computer.

Let me know if that doesn't work, and I'll post again when I get home later today (after experimenting with my display).

If my previous suggestion doesn't work, and you don't want to wait hours for me to trudge home and figure it out, you can always post a technical question on the Tool Kit thread. There will be enough people who follow that thread to answer a question quickly.

    • HappyDance Thank you for your suggestion and taking the time to answer. It's late at night right now where I live, so I'll have a look tomorrow. It's not urgent anyway! 😀

Yes.  I was able to confirm that the option I suspected was the one you need to revise is indeed the one.

      look for:

the pull down menu offers four options. Three will display the goal amount; the default option will not.  Pick one. Save the tool kit changes. Refresh your budget page.  Ta-da-da-dahhhh

For the record, the Toolkit is also available for FIrefox.

  • Magenta Foal I'm so happy to hear the Budget Template helped make things click for you! The How to Create a Budget Template blog post is one of my absolute favorites and has been a go-to of mine ever since it was written. Our education team then created the Set Up Your Budget Workshop (based on the template information) and I was in absolute love! If you haven't taken the class it's work taking a look, but it sounds like you've got things well underway now! :)
