Logging directly into browser on mobile

I am searching for a way to view my account on my mobile device without downloading the app. Is this possible ??

  • You can try requesting the desktop site. But it doesn’t always work and the experience is pretty suboptimal.

  • Hi Erica Trofa !

Most mobile browsers are unable to support the web app, so you'll automatically be prompted to use the mobile app instead. You can try requesting the desktop site, like WordTenor mentioned, but it's designed to reroute you so that approach doesn't always work.

  • I’ve also been looking for a way to do this. The Safari browser on an iPad should certainly be able to support the full web experience, and the app is missing some nice features of the web version (specifically the reporting. Can YNAB please provide a link on the notification suggesting the app to go to the full site, and respect that request without re-routing?

    • Hi Woolloomooloo !

The re-route is based on the browser attempting to access the site. If it's a mobile browser, it reroutes because of that. The only way to override that is to use the Request Desktop option, but it will only work on mobile browsers that can support the full web app.

    • Faness Thank you for responding. Neither Chrome, Safari or Firefox on iPad is given this option unfortunately. I don't think the browser's capability is considered, because if I change the identity of Safari on Mac to say it's an 'iPad' (via the developer menu) I get immediately booted from the site even though it's actually supported.

Hopefully you can find a way to support it in the near future.

    • Woolloomooloo I apologize! I misspoke - it isn't the browser, it's the operating system of the device. That's why indicating it's an iPad reroutes to the mobile app. Sorry about that!

I'l let our development team know you'd like to see this option in the future. If you have a moment, you can also let them know directly by submitting a Feature Request. :)

  • Or add the missing features. I’d like to be able to reconcile on phone and iPad although I bet there’s loads of old threads telling me why I can’t ! 😀

    • Hi lindsay_g !

This is the eventual goal! We'd love to bring all of the features to the mobile app, but there's quite a few things we have to tackle to make that happen. :)

  • The lack of being able to import transactions on iOS means I’m limited to my desktop. There’d be great value in being able to do this, especially as the UK does not allow direct importing of bank data.

    • Hi Navy Blue Unicorn !

Can you submit a Feature Request to let our development team know you'd like to see this option? Currently, most mobile browsers aren't equipped to handle the web app and the mobile app isn't equipped to handle the importing of files. I understand the inconvenience this can cause so hopefully we'll be able to smooth out this process in the future! :)

  • I have a Windows 10 Mobile phone, and I just set the browser preference to Desktop version, and it works fine.  By "fine" I mean really really scrunched, so there's tons of scrolling required, and basically really hard to use, but you can adjust budget numbers, and import data into accounts, and clear transactions, etc.

I just don't think it's in a format that I'll be using it a lot.  However, in a pinch, if I need to see how much is in a category, I could log in, and see.

    • Bruce Those formatting issues are why even if a user can access the web app on mobile, we don't suggest it. However, I completely understand how it could be useful in certain pinches. :)

    • Faness That would not be an issue on an iPad though. I don't think it's suitable for a phone, but a 9" plus iPad it would work fine (it's basically the same size as a lot of ultra-portable Windows machines)

    • Woolloomooloo I haven't had the chance to view the web app on an iPad - I've tried, but it's one of those cases where I'm directed back to the mobile app instead. We're hoping to make the app fully featured so there's less of a need for the web app on mobile. :)

Bruce where do you set the browser preference?

  • I would be willing to simply use the iOS app (on my iPad) *if* the iOS app was fully featured :-)

  • I cannot install the app because my Android version isn't supported. And I can't get into the website because it redirects to the app store where it says I can't install the app. This is way beyond frustrating. Is there a way around it or some plan to stop it redirecting? Or a plan to have an app that works?

    • Hi Tomato Nomad !

Sorry for the inconvenience! Android 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher is required for the YNAB app to work on an Android device. Since mobile browsers don't support the web app, it redirects to the app. Some devices allow a "Request Desktop Site" option, but it doesn't always work and isn't available on all devices. I wish I had better news, but currently, there isn't a guaranteed work around for older devices.

  • There is a way. You have to manually type in the link for the desktop browser. It is:

    app.youneedabudget.com/users/authentication

You could also copy and paste it. This should bypass the mobile filtering and bring you straight to the desktop browser site. It’s a work around for now until they get with the program, pun intended, and update their site to work better with modern mobile browsers, or bring the app up to the same level as the desktop site. If you look at any desktop browser address bar when you land on the login page, it will show this address if you select the address bar. I’m using an iPad Pro 12.9” running iPadOS 13. Thanks!

    • Scott Katzelnick BTW, you can’t just click the link in my post above. You actually have to type it in or, copy and paste it for it to work. If you just click on it, it’ll still redirect you to the app. Happy YNAB’ing!

    • Scott Katzelnick Thanks Scott but that didn't work. It allowed me to log in but then went to the download the app page. I tried copy/paste and typing it in but got the same result. I couldn't get to anything except the settings page or the download the app page. I guess I'll go and buy a notebook and pen!

    • Tomato Nomad I just tried it on my phone, iPhone, it did what you said, but on my iPad it did work. Very strange. Unfortunately, we aren’t privy to the YNAB redirecting logic so we can’t see exactly what’s happening and why. Sorry about that.

  • It is really quite ridiculous to not include a link on the app download page to the full site url.

There are reports I need that are not in mobile and because I’m mobile I can’t access them at all.

    Frustrating.

The YNAB team should research how many people will bother to comment or ask versus just get frustrated and leave / shutdown.  Knowing that you may be surprised by how many people really desire this to not automatically redirect

    • Hi Sky Blue Wildebeest !

The web app isn't supported by most mobile browsers at this time, so we do have a road block in place. With the latest iOS update, accessing the web app from a mobile device using iOS 13 is possible. At this time, we can't say for certain if this option will remain intact going forward, but a number of YNABers have been taking advantage of it. :)

  • Figured it out.  Get Dolphin browser, go to settings and choose “Desktop Mode”,  and use link http://app.youneedabudget.com/users/authentication

  • Garbage. We are getting charged monthly now with the web app, but it has less functionality than the classic app. So we pay more for less.

I don’t use a desktop computer when I travel, only Ipad. so no way to reconcile my accounts at all.

    • Purple Mare The web app isn't officially supported on mobile devices at this time, though recent changes with iOS 13 have made it so that—with the exception of a few features like File-Based Importingthe web app works quite well on an iPad running Safari. You are welcome to run it that way, though you may need to Request Desktop Version on your browser when logging in.

So you should be able to reconcile on your iPad, but let me know if you run into any trouble.

    • Matthew This may come as a surprise but not everybody has an iPad and not everyone wants to throw a perfectly good phone away every two years just so they can use your app.

    • Hi Tomato Nomad !

We're working on bringing more functionality to the mobile app, so that those additional features won't be iOS 13 web browser exclusive. I understand this isn't ideal at the moment, but we hope to someday make the mobile app as fully functioning as the web app. :)

    • Faness Your mobile app is not compatible with my phone, which is only two years old,  so the number of features you add is completely irrelevant to me as I cannot get it at all.

Tomato Nomad Android 6.0 was released over 4 years ago - I think you should be able to update the OS on your phone

    • Hey Tomato Nomad ! The YNAB mobile app works with devices running the following operating systems:

      • Android: 6.0 (Marshmallow) or higher.
      • iPhone & iPad: iOS 11 or later, on iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.

If your device is running an older operating system, it won't be compatible. Is that the case for you? If you're on Android, let me know—because we may have an alternative for you.

    • srg No, I checked. It isn't possible to update the OS. I'm supposed to toss it away and buy a new phone. Every other app I've wanted works just fine (including YNAB classic), but the new YNAB doesn't.

    • Nicole Yes, it is running an older operating system, and I've checked and it can't be updated. I am on Android, and would love to have an alternative. Thank you.

    • Tomato Nomad  Do you know what version your operating system is? Here’s a link to the last Android APK file that was compatible with Android 5.0 and higher. I'm hoping that works for your phone!

You can download this file directly to your device and follow the prompts to install it. You may need to allow installing apps from unknown sources first, and open the .apk using your file manager app. Let me know how it goes!

    • Nicole I've been through all this before. The operating system I have is an older version and not compatible and the file doesn't work. I've called Samsung and tried to get something to work and the only thing I can do is throw the phone away and get a new one. Every other app I've ever wanted has worked just fine. YNAB is the only one that has not been compatible.

    • Tomato Nomad Ah, I'm sorry about the false hope! It sounds like you might be using Android 4.0 or earlier?

Every new Android version (currently 10) introduces changes that bring significant security and performance improvements that may not be compatible with an older version. Our developers walk a fine line, and it's not a decision that's made lightly.

  • Not entirely sure how, but I'm happily using the web app in Safari on a newish iPad Pro. It's much better than the ios app.  I'm in the UK so don't have import issues.

As far as I can remember, I logged into and was using the web app in Safari on my mac, saved a link to my Mac favourites bar (by dragging the address line into the favourites bar). The favourite and passwords etc. get copied to the iPad by iCloud, so I just use that link.

Now all I need is the Toolbox features without having to have keep a browser (on Mac, I don't even try on the iPad) specially for them.

    • Chris Curtis PS The link saved is complicated with a long string of hex-numbers and hyphens after the obvious "app.youneedabudget.com/", followed by "/budget". and looks like it incorporates a personal identifier or folder name, so bypassing any filtering.

    • Chris Curtis With iOS 13, Apple added desktop-class browsing in Safari for iPad. While not officially supported, we've found it works quite well with the web app! I'd recommend updating your bookmark to app.youneedabudget.com. The numbers after "/budget" point you to a specific month.

If you're still seeing the roadblock in Safari on iPad, a settings change may help:

Navigate to the Settings app: Safari > Request Desktop Website (under the Settings for Websites heading) > toggle on All Websites.

    • Nicole Thanks. That works fine. I already had the “request desktop website” for all websites set on my iPad (It’s one of the big iPad Pros and is more powerful than the Macbook Air it replaced!
