Deleting old versions
I've been using YNAB for a number of years and have now had 3 years in a row where it's balanced against reality within £20, I'm happy! Each new year I delete all the previous transactions, retain the categories and enter starting balances. All is well but the program is now getting very lethargic due (I think) to all the old versions that YNAB keeps. So the big question is is there anyway to thin out the old versions?
Are you on YNAB4 using the Fresh Start option? If not, try that. (File>Make a Fresh Start...)
If you're just deleting old transactions, I think behind the scenes it just marks them as deleted and wont show them, but they may still be there somewhere behind the scenes causing slowness, so the true Fresh Start option makes more sense.
Also, if you have a lot of mobile devices or other computers accessing the budget, you might want to compact it. (Ctrl+Shift+Alt+C)
Hi Navy Blue Cyborg !
If you're using YNAB 4, here are two simple steps to speed up your budget loading time:
Open up YNAB 4 and go to File > Save a Version and then File > Load another version (and choose the top one). That should make the initial load time faster.
If you’d like to reduce the size of your files, you can open your budget in YNAB and press [ctrl-alt-shift-c] on Windows and [Shift+Option+Command+C] on a Mac. That will compress your budget folder.
The new YNAB is cloud based, so you shouldn't see any lag there unless there's an issue with your internet connection. :)
Thanks for the replies, it is a YNAB 4.X and having tried Faness's hint the pause is still there, after starting the program, from the moment I get the YNAB blue screen I then have to wait just over 30 seconds for the data to appear. Looking at previous versions (under Files) I have copies going back to Jan 2016 none of which I want. I'll try 'a clean start' but I need to carry over the categories and their associated running balances which I suspect will be lost. So question two is: is it possible to copy category balances from one YNAB to another. Off to play :)
PS having just had a play, something for the developers to ponder :)
My current YNAB (cleaned no transactions for 2018) has a file size of 53M, if I start afresh I loose all my 'carry over' category balances but the file size increases to 60M on the disk, all the old versions are still present and the load delay remains 30+ seconds.
If I create a brand new (new user) YNAB I get a file size of 17K and there is no delay in loading the program. Please may I request a 'clean' function for the database that cleans out the old data.
OK, progress has been made, I've discovered how to remove old versions and thanks to Ben compacting has reduced the file size from 52M to just over 5M. I have tried the routine given by Faness at YNAB but that didn't seem to do much and the data load time still seems excessive at 30+ seconds. Will continue to tinker (on a duplicate YNAB4 file) to see if I can get the load time down. I have checked all the transactions and believe I now have none dated before 31DEC2017 but will have another look tomorrow when the grey matter is more fresh. Thanks all for your help.
