What is Your Budget's Name?

Hi everyone! I've always had a difficult time naming my budget in YNAB and I've been wondering what other people name their budgets. And now I have a place to ask!

Is your budget name something silly, meaningful, or serious? I would love to know!

My budget is usually called "Lemons and Limes" because when I was little and my family was doing well financially we would have more fresh produce in the kitchen because we could afford it.

Thank you to anyone that replies!

  • I currently just use "Bre: 2017" but I've been meaning to change it to something a little less boring, maybe I'll come up with something for the new year haha

  • I decided to start fresh this year when I paid off my debts (so excited!) so I named it "Debt Free Budget".  It just makes me happy every time I see it!

  • I have 3 budget files I keep:

"Budget 20xx" <-- The "real" budget for the current year

"Forecasting" <-- The "planning" budget where I look forward to next month to get an idea of what I have coming up, if there is anything out of the ordinary I need to plan for, etc...

"Sandbox" <-- The "playpen" budget where I mess around with the system, figure out things I'm confused about, and get more familiar with new features.

No fancy or clever names (I'm boring when it comes to money).

  • After a brief six month hiatus, I started a new budget and called it "The Retirement Budget".  I will be retiring in about 2 1/2 years and really want to save as much as possible during that time.  I'm hoping it will give me inspiration! 🙂

I just started using ynab and I'm loving it so far. I've never used a budget before. Previously, I just spent as little as possible and funneled whatever was left into savings.

Giving every dollar a job has been a refreshing mindset change.

Coral Memory You need a gif of Seth Rogen from the Like a Boss video to play every time you open your budget with a name like that. We should get YNAB on that.

I'm currently on <Name>'s Budget Mk.III and Shared Budget.  DW has never even opened <DW Name>'s Budget, but it exists too.  Doesn't even have an account listed.

  • I just stumbled upon this post, and I felt inspired to rename my budget to "Phoenix Rising" as a result. After a painful divorce and attempting to start over practically from scratch at age 40, I felt the symbolism was fitting. Thanks for the inspiring post  Kate !

  • My budget is named Grand Nagus because I'm dorky and love Star Trek.

For those who don't know, the Ferengi are a civilization whose sole meaningful purpose in life is to earn a profit. The Grand Nagus is their financial leader. 😄

  • Like some others I wasn't actively aware my budget has a name. I though about having Norbert look after mine too, if HappyDance  would let me. But decided for Norwegian ridgeback instead 😁. (Harry Potter too, for those who don't know. He has to steal its egg) They're vicious. And I'm slightly YNAB obsessed at the moment.

HappyDance I notice that you have the Classic Forum in your favorites! Do you know if it's been taken down? Every time I try to log in now, I get a message saying "You need to reset your password. This is most likely because an administrator recently changed your account information. Click here to reset your password.". I actually tried doing that, despite my skepticism, but still get the message...

Violet Drill sent you a PM.  We are all just sitting vigil in the classic forum until the plug gets pulled on Nov.30. (sniffle) 😥  It's sad to say goodbye to my first YNAB salon. I learned so much there, not the least of which is there were others like me in the world. 🙂

  • I have a test budget to understand how the math works without messing up my actual budget and transactions. I have the normal checking and savings. But additional accounts that I track and use like credit cards, 401k, my kid's accounts, etc. Should the account be on budgeted or only tracked? What happens if a credit card is budgeted and overspent a category at the end of the month, where does the math take me...

    • Kevin Spear Hey, Kevin! Credit cards should definitely be Budget accounts. Your 401(k) should definitely be a Tracking account. Kids' accounts could be either, depending on the details, but if they're accounts that you transfer money to and then your kids are in charge of spending from them, that should be a Tracking account—or not part of your budget at all.

For example, my kid has a checking account, and when I pay their allowance, the transfer is just considered a regular outflow transaction in my budget, with my kid's name as the Payee and Allowance as the category.

  • My budget is named “Grind & Stack”, an ode to Big Boi’s “Order of Operations”.  The song is amazing, and Big Boi’s story behind the song is even better: http://songexploder.net/big-boi

Long story short: Operation Grind & Stack is about spending less frivolously and saving money!

  • Very factual. One for each of the two countries I bank in, named the names of those countries. One my son uses for his pocket money... named his name. Another called after him where I keep track of me saving for his future (this confuses us both 😉 One called a really loooong name something like ‘retirement savings, money that’s in the other budget already but for keeping track’ and a little sandpit called ‘UK what if...’ that was for working out if I can afford to move home. But I can’t.  😐
