Canada COVID19 wage subsidy for employers

I am just writing this in case there are any Canadian business owners (or influencers) on here. The application for the Canada Employment Wage Subsidy (CEWS) is launching on Monday April 27.  You can retroactively hire back people if you laid them off or pay them additional amounts if you had to cut their hours. REPEAT - you can hire back people retroactively. This would be beneficial as EI is defaulting to the Canada Emergency Response benefit if they were laid off after March 15 which is $500 per week. The maximum benefit under the CEWS is $847 per week.

Its really a convulated calculation but there is a calculator on the CRA website now. https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/subsidy/emergency-wage-subsidy.html

I really encourage you to look into this if it applies to your company. If you are an employee who isn't getting paid, make sure your company knows about this. They can pay you. And if they pay people who are not actually working (furloughed), the employer can also get back the employer-paid portion of the EI and CPP premiums.

  • This has been extended to August 29. The uptake has been slow but if you are eligible, apply.
