Some YNAB wins so far for a new user.
I started budgeting with YNAB since Jan. 31st. It has been just over a week since then, and I can definitely say that my life has never been the same. Here are a few things that I can do now with YNAB that I have never been able to do so before:
- I can actually treat myself in a financially responsible manner, guilt-free. <3 This makes me feel so empowered over my spending, and as someone who used to run up her credit card bill without understanding where my money is going and by how much, this is sincerely changing my perspective on my own internal locus of control.
- It makes it easier for me to track my spending on-the-go since the mobile app is fully-functioning and remembers the categories and amount budgeted that I've laid out. I've gotten to the point where I can track every expense on the day that I did it, but if I forget, YNAB easily allows me to change the date of transaction. I also know immediately if I've overspent, and if so, by how much, and from which category. I can also quickly compensate for that overspending using money from other categories, and YNAB records that as well. So powerful. An Excel sheet is a possible, cheaper alternative, but YNAB reduces the friction of establishing this habit of expense-tracking by laying it all out for you in a clean, attractive, and fully-functional interface. I fully plan to pay for it yearly when my free trial is up.
I told many of my loved ones about YNAB because I was already feeling the benefits of YNAB from day one. It may feel limiting to know that I have to check my budget first before I do something like go to the grocery store or go out with my friends, but I actually see it as a form of self-love and care since monitoring my expenses helps me honor the spending limits that I've established for myself in order to stay financially afloat. If I say no to a spending prospect, it's because I have a clear and specific reason why, rather than a vague awareness of overspending, but not fully understanding what my limits are. Thanks so much, YNAB! I'm not exaggerating when I say that you've helped me change my life!
