Looking at Next Month

I get paid on the 28th and my phone bill comes out the 29th. So for this month, I have already paid for April, when I go to April I cant get it to turn green  without it doubling the money amount in the available account.

  • Hi, there! Can you clarify what's happening this month? It sounds like you have a goal in that category for your monthly phone bill amount, and when you were paid yesterday you assigned money to the Phone Bill category for that amount. Your phone bill is now pending with the bank as of today (that is, it isn't reflected in that category yet). Is that the case?

    • Dela So i am basically always a month ahead on my phone bill. When I go to the April page, and try to turn that line from orange to green, it doubles the amount in the available column. So it will be orange and show the amount the bill will be, when I budget the money to the bill, it is doubling the number and turning green.

    • Matthew Are we destined to have several forum threads at the end of every month related to the fact that this one aspect of YNAB doesn't calculate in real time, like the rest of the software?  I think this is the 3rd or 4th for the end of March so far...

Move Light Sound Life Yes, destined to always show the current month as the current month.  The person could change the due date to March 28th.

    • Blue Moose Of course YNAB should show the current month as the current month. That's not debated.

Flip to the next month. All calculations are calculated except this one goal. Not intuitive.

    • Ivory Wizard In an effort to actually be helpful, if you're paid this late in the month and are already a month ahead on your bills, consider learning about and using the Income for Next Month workflow.  It will allow you to use a goal type (monthly savings builder) that plays more nicely with displaying the warnings you seem to want to see.

This month is March, not April. In YNAB transactions are based on the transaction date, not the due date.

    • nolesrule I understand that it is still March.. I have already made the March payment, so I want it to turn green on April.

Ivory Wizard For fixed expenses use the monthly savings builder goal type. I can make them all go green in april, just tried.

Needed for spending goals are for when you always want a set amount available but might spend less, so next month (after the month rolls over) is the point at which the unfunded amount can be calculated. (and yes i agree if you budget 100% of the spending goal next month then it is stupid not to know it should be green already)

  • You still need to save money for your phone bill to pay on 29th April. So yes, you still need to budget money in April to pay for the bill that comes in April.

    • Ceeses I get what you are saying, but that isnt the problem. I want it to turn green in April without doubling the payment,

Ivory Wizard How would you be doubling the payment? Aren't you going to receive a bill on April 29? Don't you need to put money aside to pay that bill? And aren't you going to put the money aside for that bill during April? If you say yes to all three, then the category needs to be yellow in April until you have put the money aside in April to pay for the bill that will come on April 29.

And in YNAB, you put money aside by budgeting in the category.

There is a certain irony in creating goals which only work if you budget an entire month in a go in a version of the software created specifically so that people could budget ahead piecemeal...

    • WordTenor The new "Remove Overfunding" button can be really useful here. Budget ahead based on the full amount, then remove overfunding on the first.
