Now Here: Direct Import in the UK and EU

We are very pleased to announce the official addition of a third import partner: TrueLayer.

TrueLayer supports select UK and EU banks (we use their Data API).

Here are instructions for linking an account on web and mobile devices.

If you find your bank isn’t supported, please use the Suggest an Institution link after searching in-app. We’ll share the list with TrueLayer for review.

As always, our support team is happy to help with any import issues and questions, so please reach out to us (not TrueLayer) if you need anything.

Yep. Not a single Finnish 🇫🇮 bank available. I will continue to pay the full price and enter manually.

Orchid Cheetah go ahead and write to [email protected] — if you've attempted to link accounts in the past we may need to do a manual switch on our side to get you redirected to TrueLayer.

    • Hannah M-M I don't see a TrueLayer connection option, only Plaid. I had connected to AMEX in the past. I will email support, thanks.

  • 10 banks for Germany... that's a joke. I als don't understand why you chose someone so slow at implementing the pds2 directive. al banks are easily accessible in EU do to PDS2. but it seems true layer is having such a hard time implementing any decent coverage...  they randomly choose a few odd or large banks and that's it.

    • Cornflower Blue Pony Also a big disappointment for me. Of all the banks we have in the eu only a very selected list of banks is supported with no known timeline when they will add extra banks or countries.

Our subscription fee has been increased, but I don't see a lot of added value for the European users for this extra money.

  • I completely agree with you. I still have a few more months, but for sure i will not renew at the new and improved price. I have now started looking at cheaper alternatives. Might not have the direct import, but it's not like I've even used it. I still hope in the meantime they will get their game up, but moist likely they will not. I am waiting for the holidays to pass and then I will try to find the best app to fit my needs :)

  • Just a quick question from the UK..  How often does YNAB load the data from TrueLayer. Is it once a day or multiple?  Cheers

    • Slate Blue Network Great question! TrueLayer will start a sync with your financial institution when you access your budget (so it can happen multiple times/day!), and they also do a nightly sync with your financial institution if you don't access your budget every day. I hope that helps to clarify!

      Hi Rachel

      So to clarify;

What triggers an ‘access’ of budget - is it simply opening the app, or is each refresh an open, too?

If I ‘access’ my budget on desktop browser at 8am, then via mobile app at 10am, again via mobile app at 1pm then again via desktop web at 5pm, my banking data will be accessed and synced 4 times ?

What if I access budget via mobile app 5 times between 9am and 12am?

      Like
    • QuaCKeReD  Accessing your budget means opening the app, or force refreshing. YNAB will attempt to sync with your financial institutions once in the early morning hours and then again if its been 6 hours since you last opened the app/force refreshed. I hope that clarifies things!

  • I've switched my syncing from syncforynab to this new direct import.

Transactions from my bank. Monzo, used to appear in YNAB instantly. I have some transactions from today that still haven't appeared. One from this morning, at 0845, that still hasn't appeared and it's now 1730.

What's up with the huge delay? It used to be instant with the other service.

    • Orange Deer Great question! Most people won't experience any difference as YNAB has the same import frequency as Sync for YNAB, which is every six hours.

That said, Sync for YNAB implemented webhooks for Monzo (and Starling Bank), and we don't have plans to implement those just yet, so you will notice the import frequency changing there.

  • I have a question: according to this website

    https://truelayer.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360013353598-What-banks-are-supported-in-Germany-

N26 Germany is supported and live. But for some reason I can’t find that bank in the YNAB list? Is it not included yet? When will you guys implement it? I mean after all it seems to be working with truelayer already.

And second question: I used to be able to sync my Amex with YNAB. But now it’s no longer possible to chose YNAB because for European Users plaid seems to be no longer available? So there is no way of connecting my Amex now right?

    • Pink Horn  Hi, there! I've sent you an email so we can get to the bottom of this N26 Germany question. I don't see it enabled on our end, so I've opened a ticket with TrueLayer to ask what's up. We can connect via email on this going forward, since we can't troubleshoot direct import issues in the Forum. :)

As for AMEX, it's a tricky beast because it's so global. We're not able to adjust change region for any particular bank since that is determined by the bank itself—and at this time YNABers can only have access to banks from one region. That said, we do have an option in TrueLayer that is listed under the name Amex (UK). Try connecting under that option, if you haven't already. If it doesn't work, we can troubleshoot via email.

    • Hey Dela, is there some new information regarding N26 Germany?

      Like
    • Coral Barnacle Sure is! According to TrueLayer, they don't yet support N26 Germany for data (which we'd need for direct import), but they have brought it to their team for consideration for future implementation.

  • I have a query about linked accounts. I set my account up as linked and the first import worked really well. Over the last three days I have watched transactions move from pending to cleared on my bank app. In this time period only two have made it across via sync.  Both transactions were the same date but there was another transaction on that day that didn't make it across.

I sorted of imagined that when I logged in YNAB but be a true and accurate reflection of my bank and thus would make reconciliation easier.

If import is going to be sporadic (not blaming YNAB here) then is it ok if I run a reconciliation and manually clear transactions that have cleared in my bank account?  What happens when they do actually import, will this cause duplications?

    Thanks in advance,

    Like
    • Gold Cello  We check for transactions once every morning and when you access the app if we haven't imported within the last 6 hours. It can take up to 3 days for cleared transactions to make it from your bank to YNAB, though—this depends on when your bank makes transactions available.

If you are seeing a delay in your transactions that is consistent and persists for more than 72 hours, please get in touch with our team! :)

It is totally ok for you to reconcile and clear transactions manually. When those cleared transactions import, they'll match with the ones you entered.

  • One of the banks that I would like to connect to (UK) is on the list on the Truelayer blog as “coming soon”, but the post was 6 months ago. Would be nice to know how long it’s likely to be before these institutions are likely to come online.

  • I don't know if TrueLayer is the best provider for YNAB.  It supports very few banks in the EU, considering that the PSD2 APIs are standard and easy to implement.

I have written to TrueLayer to add a bank to their list, but they have indicated that it is YNAB who has to request it from TrueLayer.

Please, can you request to add “Openbank”, it’s a Spanish bank, a subsidiary of Banco Santander

    • Alceambidestro Certain delays can be expected, but can sometimes indicate a direct import issue. It looks like you were able to get in touch with support about this! We aren't able to troubleshoot direct import issues in the Forum, so if you're still running into trouble you can reply to that email - our team will help you get to the bottom of it!

    • Sea Green Commander Not currently, but we know this is something that a lot of YNABers would benefit from. Right now each individual YNAB account can be connected to one import partner.

  • This is just coming at the right time! I was considering moving over to PocketSmith since they have by bank connections, but glad to hear many banks are added already like my ING BANK (NL).

I only still miss the N26 bank, which should be easy since they are big on API's!

  • Hey, just renewed my ynab account to finally have that option to connect to my bank. And it is listed in TrueLayers list of supported banks: "ING Germany (DE)".

Now when I try to connect and submit my credentials in the popup an error appears. No connection achieved yet.

Where can I report this error?

Magenta Projector Not sure why it would be any problem to state your bank on a forum - it's not as though anyone could find your details from your forum name or anything. But it's probably best to reach out to the support team, although I think they are thin on the ground at the moment due to the holidays.

Magenta Projector No worries. Although even if it were your real name I doubt anyone could do much by knowing who you bank with. 😉

Hope you get it sorted. 🙂

      Gray Rain I moved to Direct Import and am about to move back to SFY - DI is way too slow in transactions coming through;

Went supermarket yesterday at 14:21, transaction showed up in YNAB some time after 10:00 today - 18 hours later. Which, by YNAB own information, should have had 3 pulls from bank in that time (every 6 hours).

  • Hi,

I have tried it.  Several times.  It properly connects to my Dutch bank, asks for permissions, I give them, click to confirm, then the popup window that showed my bank changes to a blank page on a ynab URL, and then ... nothing.  Same thing on both Firefox and Safari.  Does it just take a very long time, or is something stuck?

    • One more thing:  the connections do not show up in "manage connections".  So now I have given TrueLayer some permissions to access my Rabobank data, and I cannot revoke them.  Very scary.  Please rectify immediately.

    • Update: I tried it on mobile (above was with a web browser on Mac) and mobile gave more information : it says that direct import is temporarily unavailable, directing me to a status page that did not contain any relevant information; nowhere was a problem with TrueLayer nor my bank mentioned.  You folks have got some work to do :)  Hope it is just temporary.

  • I just wanted to say thanks for this.

I was paying for YNAB and Sync forYNAB to sync my UK accounts.
But, now YNAB does everything SyncForYNAB did, so that part of the cost is gone.
SyncForYNAB did fill a very useful gap though, so I'm thankful that existed for me over the last few years.

It makes it easier to recommend to family and friends in the UK now.

    🙂
