Can someone please tell me where Budget for Upcoming went?

Yes, here I am again complaining about changes to Quick Budget... but Budget for Upcoming has disappeared, and presumably rolled into the ubiquitous and vague "underfunded."  This is more annoying to me than any of the other recent changes I've complained about.

For instance, I give my kids an allowance every week (dependent on a weekly performance review heh) and it's scheduled, recurring.  I used to check in on my next month budget and hit "budget for upcoming" as the current month's payouts aren't complete.  I do this with a whole bunch of recurring scheduled expenses.  Now I have to manually type the total of upcoming transactions otherwise it just "tops it off" and becomes a deficit after another current month transaction fires.  Plus, if it's a weekly schedule, or irregular, some months are going to have different amounts so I can't just hit "last month's amount."

Is this quick budget button really gone? Permanently?  And why am I the only one having issues with this stuff?

  • Update: It's a bug. We're working on it. Using Underfunded to budget for scheduled transactions or a Monthly/Weekly Needed for Spending goal in a future month should both ignore any money in the category right now. And currently it's not ignoring the rollover money when you're funding for a scheduled transaction.

Matthew OMG You're kidding.  It's a bug??  Wow, I'm glad I whined about it then.  I truly thought it was my aging eyes and brain, or something was just swiped from us.  Reminder to do the iOS beta survey, thanks!! :)

Matthew Hi Matthew, I'm still observing this behaviour - is there an ETA for this bug fix?  Thanks!

    • Coral Crab Okay, I heard back right away! This fix is still a few weeks off—it's a high priority, but there's a bigger project (something on our Up Next page) that needs to ship first. Thanks for your patience! I'm definitely looking forward to the fix for this one, too.

Matthew Hi Matthew, thank you for the update :)  How will I know if it is resolved?  I assume it will be in the release notes?

  • And it still really bothers me I can't see my goal amounts anymore, especially in prior months.  I like to see what I was supposed to budget vs. what I really spent sometimes.  But deleting the amount budgeted only shows me how much I should put back in to cover the entire amount spent.  I don't know why you guys think that something actually useful is NOT useful all of a sudden.

Huh... I dunno.  With most stuff I go for the "Spent Last Month" option, cause I want to re-fill the category back up to the nominal amount - for instance I have one weekly expense that's $49.xx, so I budget it to 250 for the month, and each month I just budget in however much I spent last month.  I've also already filled out my May budget, so everything is showing well and truly funded already so I can't really figure much out in the June page.

TheTabby Yeah, spent last month is easy for something like Mortgage payment.  But even subscriptions get messed up for me.  My subscription category is funded every month according to which are due that month.  So I would hit budget for upcoming every month, for the past decade.  So the amount is very often different 90% of the time.  So I have no way to quick budget for May until April is over.

  • Annieland This doesn't seem right to me, either—I'm checking with a developer!

  • I think I remember something about if you have a goal on a category, and you haven't funded that yet, the button will be "underfunded." However, it could be that there are upcoming scheduled transactions that would require more than the goal is asking for. Once you find the goal (manually, because as you say, they're rolled together), the button says "budget for upcoming" instead.

I think the problem that you might be facing here is in trying to budget a month ahead.  The scheduler only has the next iteration of a repeating transaction, which may not yet exist for May (for example, if the April 28th item was waiting to be repeated on May 25th).  So, Mary's budget page just might not know that there will be a transaction yet.

However, it could be a combination of the two implications above. The Scheduled Transactions that have populated for May may not exceed your normal goal yet, therefore, the button had the general name of underfunded (instead of the more specific name).

Anyways, this isn't new, if that's how it's working for you. I know I've seen budget for upcoming recently.

Move Light Sound Life Huh.  Well I haven't seen it for the past couple of weeks so that's why I was asking where it went, because I thought there could be a chance it moved or I just lost it somehow on my end.  If you still have it, then I'll mess around some more and see if I can trigger it again, but for the past two weeks I haven't been able to.

I've budgeted a month ahead for years.  It's always taken into account what's upcoming.  I think if I just did a move money to cover a yellow (or blue in toolbox) warning it would fill it much as  Underfunded does, and would leave a yellow $0.00.  BUT Budget for Upcoming always put in the full amount.

  • I was wondering about this as well and have just been working around it.  Will be happy to see the return of Budget for Upcoming.

I would just add that some proactive communication would be helpful in a case like this.  We have the Up Next page to show what is in the pipeline.  A Known Issues page to cover bugs or other anomalies would be a welcome addition.

Budget_NC I agree, but I could give them a pass on this one if it was only noticed late on a Sunday.

Annieland Agree.  It's just a general observation that a place to put things like this when they're discovered could be helpful.
