New Spending Goals not working as demonstrated

After watching the YNAB "Heard it from Hannah" video on the new goals, I decided to give the new Spending Goal a whirl.  I'm not seeing the same results as demonstrated in the video.

As I understood it, when I fully fund my spending goal, the pill turns green and I get the dopamine rush of the little check mark in the green pill.

Now when I spend from that goal, it should stay green since I fully funded the goal and am spending from it specifically.  Right?

That's not what's happening.

In the case of my kids' allowance goal.  I fully funded it on the 1st...boom: green pill with check mark. 馃榿

Then, my son wanted to spend some of that allowance today.  I paid for what he wanted in an online transaction (using my AMEX).  The money spent was assigned to the same allowance category, but here's what the pill looks like after:

I budgeted $120 on the 1st.  I also transferred the first $60 of the month to their accounts on the 1st.  I have another scheduled transfer from my checking to their accounts for $60 on the 15th.  I spent 19.98 from that category on the 2nd.

Why is it showing underfunded?

Thanks for any insight.

  • Hi there, the total amount that you are forecasted to spend is more than $120.

$60 already transfered+$19.98 on Amex+$60 to be transfered=$139.98. If you reduce the next transfer by the amount you spent on the AMEX it should even out. Since you paid on his behalf, you need to have him pay you back which you do by reducing his next payment by that amount.

Navy Blue Pegasus Yes, the orange color in this case doesn't say you have not met your goal. The calendar symbol tells you that you have scheduled transactions coming up that together exceed the amount of money you have currently available in this category.

It is big tricky that the same color does indicate several different things. Tough in all those cases it is trying to tell you that here in this category something is not going according to your plan and you should take note of it.

  • Yes, that's exactly how I used to handle this category, but I thought changing it to a "spending" goal would allow me to contribute to it as planned, then spend from it without changing its goal status.

Casual Trooper You don't need to change it's goal status but you do need to budget enough money to the category to cover all the spending happening from it. YNAB is just warning that if you don't you are going to overspend, even when you have budgeted to your goal level.

  • In this case, the yellow is not a goal warning. it's an Underfunded warning based on upcoming scheduled transactions. I can see that you have $60 in upcoming schedule transactions (from the toolkit feature), but your category balance has only $40.02. That's not enough to cover those transactions, hence the warning.
