End of month date problems
Hi, let's hope I can make this make sense! It does to me.
I get paid on or around the 28th of each month.
This is causing me problems on YNAB as really payday to me is the start of the month; eg I will make a flurry of payments on or after that date.
So, in January, I did all my spending, but then when i got paid on 28th Jan, any spending that comes after that date I prefer to as February spending. I don't want that in with January's figures.
What I have ended up doing is not putting any transactions in from 27th of the month, and leaving everything until 1st of the month, then spending ages putting my pay in manually as an inflow, and everything else as an outflow, all with the date of the 1st of the month. Obviously this is not ideal.
I do not have, and do not want, my account set up to reconcile with my bank automatically, I prefer the manual input.
Any ideas of an easy work around; for me Feb starts on Jan 28th not Feb 1st, as all Feb's spending starts then, and will end on Feb 28th when it then becomes March!

The easiest and most effective way to deal with this is to budget for ALL planned spending at the beginning of the month, not just the spending you want marked as January (or whatever). This will mean budgeting for both months at once. Now that I think about it, there is no other work around. If you don't have the means to budget two months at once, either stop lying to your budget or just woah on the spending for a few days. This is something I've had to do and it can be challenging but fun.
It sounds as though you need to move to a place where those bills that happen in January between 28th and 31st have been budgeted from the money that you received in December so that you're budgeting a month ahead. That would mean that when you're paycheque comes in on 28th of January, you'd actually be moving your budget ahead to February and budgeting that money there (as you would already have money allocated for the bills that occur between 28th and 31st).
This is actually what most of us are trying to achieve! So that you're budgeting far enough ahead that the pressure is off. The only way to do that is to ensure you're budgeting effectively and budgeting for all of your true expenses. take that left over money and start trying to budget a few of your recurring expenses and bills a month ahead. There are a number of articles about breaking the "paycheque to paycheque" cycle that, while you may not feel you're in that cycle or you're managing your spending effectively, can definitely help you move to a place where you're budgeting a month ahead and means that flurry of spending right after payday isn't as big a deal (especially if you're pay arrived late, for example).
The reality is you are spending in January.
If this is an occasional thing because a normal outflow in the 1st was advanced because of a weekend, I would date the spending on Feb 1. (Indeed, it should be in the scheduler, so I just wouldn't bother to change it.)
However, if you normally pay at the end of the month, your budget really should reflect that and be Available in January. As far as "screwing up the numbers", it only does that in a single month.
