CC Payment and Balance different

Yes, this issue seems to be asked ALOT on this forum and all over the internet.  Most times it occurs I can figure out the issue and correct it with no problem.  This time, it makes no sense.

So, here goes...

I pay off my credit card each week (usually Friday or Saturday).

Online:
my bank shows my CC balance as 818.35

In YNAB:
Visa Card Balance shows: -818.35
Payment category (top right) shows:  1075.33

a positive difference of $256.98

I went ahead and paid my CC because that's what I do each week.  So my bank balance now shows $0 for my credit card and my checking account was debited correctly for the 818.35 payment and the balance there too is now correctly reflected online and in YNAB.

As of 6/1/2021, there was no error or issue to speak of.  When I started off this month everything was correct in YNAB.  So, magically today there is now an additional $256.98 that has appeared out of thin air.

Before you think, oh there's overspending, underspending, budgeting mistakes, etc... There are NONE and I do mean none.

My checking acct balance (where I pay the CC from) is in complete sync with YNAB.  Every transaction from both checking and credit card that is showing in YNAB is correct and in sync with the bank.  There are no missing transactions, no transactions YNAB that aren't in the bank/cc accts.  There are no discrepancies of any kind in amounts anywhere.  I've gone back the last 6 months and went line by line to verify there is no mistake on either side.  So where could this possibly be coming from?  Yes, I have hidden categories but they are all 0.00.

I also got 5 refund payments to my CC last month.  All of them are correctly accounted for and are not contributing to this in any way.  Bottom line the transactions, refund, balances, etc, are all mathematically correct with this one exception.  The usual suspects are just not there this time.  It would be great if I could just delete the amount somehow and force it to be 0.

This is not right. You need to fix that. If your CC is a PIF card, the Payment amount should always match your card balance in the opposite direction. In other words, you need to move that $256.98 from the Payment category to TBB and then budget it into other categories. There are many ways this Payment category can get off especially when you're paying your balance off multiple times per month. You need to monitor the Payment category and make it always matchs in an equal and opposite manner.

Did you categorize these refunds to To Be Budgeted? And/or do you have other inflows categorized to TBB (cash back rewards/statement credits)? If yes, then those refunds *are* the source of the discrepancy.

An Inflow:TBB in a credit card account will reduce the balance owed on the card but will *not* move the money out of the CC payment category. If your CC accounts are reconciled (and it sounds like they are), you can safely move the extra money out of the CC category to somewhere else in your budget.

  • And let's prop up vibrant for the win. That's exactly what I did and that's what is causing the confusion. Totally missed that. In fact several months ago I had a similar issue and that was the cause there too. Totally forgot. Thanks. All good now.
