Vacation Credit ?

I booked a house for Spring Break and it was paid for using my Visa CC. The company I rented from is returning the money because of the Coronavirus. This is for a few thousand dollars, I'll always have a credit on my account. Is it possible to move expenses I charge onto my Visa to be taken out of my American Express?  If not how do I handle this?

Is this an account with the vacation company or do you mean the Visa account?

    • dakinemaui It's just my visa credit card. I already paid for my vacation, and am now getting a credit.

    • Spring Green Trumpet Ah, so you paid your Visa bill, resulting in lower debt. Is your Visa Payment category negative after entering the refund? (Refund entered in the Visa account categorized to the Vacation/whatever category.)

No, transactions mirror those in the real world. Money can be reallocated between different CC Payment categories, if you want the debt to be carried on a different card.

  • Hi Spring Green Trumpet ! How did you categorize the refund back to your vacation category or as Inflow: To be Budgeted?

When you make a purchase on a card with a positive balance, no money will move to the Credit Card Payment category, since you don’t have anything to pay back.

Double check the Visa Credit Card Payment category, you may have more money than you need in the Payment column, and you can move money those dollars to another category.

You'll still enter and categorize spending transactions as usual, in the account you use for the purchase.

    • Nicole Thank you! I didn't realize I could move money from the payment column. It hasn't hit my account yet, but it will and I wanted to know how to categorize this.

    • Spring Green Trumpet Returns/refunds should be categorized back to the original outflow category to keep spending averages and totals accurate.

    • Is your account balance, in fact, positive?

A positive (or credit) account balance wasn't clear from the quoted, due to the "always" qualifier. I took this to mean a transaction.

    • Nicole I would expect the CC Payment category to be LESS than needed when the account goes positive. OP, in such cases, TBB is increased, and those funds should be used to clear an overspent Payment category.

The Payment category should be $0 while the account balance is positive.
