Where did my surprise income go?

When we received a lump sum we didn't budget it right away and now it seems to have disappeared. Though we didn't spend it and the month isn't over spent, for some reason the money cannot be accounted for as our TBB is 0 for the month .

Also, we can continue to add to our budget even though it says 0.

We are not budgeted into the future either.

We are new to YNAB and are still feeling a bit lost, especially when it comes to the TBB area.

Any guidance or explanation would be very helpful.

  • This definitely sounds like Stealing from the Future, which is when you're budgeted into the future but YNAB pulls back money from a future month, leaving a negative To be Budgeted there.

I know you said you haven't budgeted into the future, but I would triple-check and make sure nothing is budgeted in May, even in hidden categories or Credit Card Payment categories.

You can also check whether your lump sum is reflected in your budget by performing a Budget Audit. As long as your account balance match your Total Available (and you see the lump sum deposit in your account in YNAB), you can be confident that that money is in your budget somewhere!

Please let me know if you still have questions—I'm happy to help.

    • Matthew Thanks so much! I think it was a combination of not knowing what we were doing and the fact that my paychecks come at the end of the month and at some point we must have budgeted that check in the month it came in when it is for the next month. Changing the dates in the gutter. Thank you again!
