Credit card and reimbursement to different account
Hi guys. Used YNAB since 2017 and I thought pretty successfully once I mastered it.
Just struck an issue currently.
Purchased dinner for self and 4 friends on my credit card. Entered against credit card account and allocated transaction 4/5 outflow to a reimbursement holding category called Thursday dinner reimbursements (no budget - but if reimbursement goes past the month end I add a budget, then 'remove' the budget in the next month). Final 1/5 outlfow allocated to my 'dining out with friends' category - we tend to enjoy dinner and a chat most months and thanks to YNAB I learned this is really important to me and I now fund it.
The reimbursements all were received by the next day. As these came in via cash (to a separate savings account) I recorded an inflow to that account and categorised each as inflow against the same Thursday dinner reimbursements category. I did not pay this cash against the credit card.
This all occurred within a month. The Thursday dinner reimbursements category shows $0 and I don't need a budget against that category from a category perspective.
However - the credit card account shows a correct working balance (for arguments sake -$1000), but to my thinking an incorrect payment bubble amount of $600 (lets call dinner 4 people x $100 for ease of numbers).
Am I thinking about this all wrong? The magic of YNAB is that I only spend what I have...and my categories tell me correctly that I have x to spend and it is in a, b and c places (bank accounts).
If I add a budget to Thursday dinner reimbursements of $400, this makes the credit card payment bubble $1000 which matches the $-1000 owing. However from a category perspective I don't need $400 in that category. It is currently $0.
In anticipation of help, please know that if I live close to you I would buy you a Caramello Koala as a thank you for helping me sort this out!
So this is the scenario. Your outflow for the dinner was $500 against the credit card with a split transaction being $100 for dining out and $400 for reimbursements.
Next day you have 4 separate $100 inflows into your bank account categorised as reimbursements.
I just tested this and in my case the available column for the credit card did increase by the amount of the inflow to my cash account.
So it must be something else going on and more information and maybe some screenshots are needed to work it out.
rushiec how's your investigation going here? I wanted to echo the prior response that based on the information we have so far, I would expect your Credit Card Payment category to match your working balance.
If your portion was budgeted for, and you offset the credit overspend (-$400) created by the four other portions with your reimbursement (leaving you with $0 available in your reimbursements category), your Credit Card Payment category should have the full amount set aside!
If you have any additional info or screenshots to share, that would be super helpful! Just let us know how it's going 😊
Thanks team - finally figured it out. I went to get all the screen shots to include here, but when typing out what was happening I realised why YNAB had the issue!
I had (in YNAB) recorded this as cash received (inflow) into another credit card account...when in actual fact it went into a savings account, then was transferred (payment) into the credit card account. YNAB didn't like that! (*this could technically happen though - however now I know what caused it I will represent it more accurately). I corrected these transactions to savings account and then added an immediate tfr savings to other credit card and the payment bubble against original card is now correct. My issue has arisen as I have coralled one bank account and one credit card and am using them with DH to hold shared expenses/budget...it's great to have it all separated and clear but that is my oldest bank account and the one many friends have for sharing expenses.
Thanks to SgtBatten and Rachel for responding.
