Order of transactions in the register

I have been a user of YNAB desktop for ages. That has not been updated for a while. I subscribed to YNAB online hoping that my number 1 gripe about the desktop version has been fixed. But no, there's still no option to sort the transactions as they appear in the register the way I want. And what I want is simple: to just sort them by transaction date and the order by which I entered them, instead of the current by date and by amount from smallest (highest negative)  to highest.

Who among of you are the same way irritated that when you have a lot of transactions in a day, as you enter transactions they immediately sink among the various transactions for the day and you have to search for them if you want to review for example if it was assigned to the correct category?

  • Can't say that I am... When I need to refer back to a transaction, I normally search for that payee, and the transaction is usually right on top. Or I might discover mis-categorization by looking at the Activity detail, where one click brings up the transaction to edit.

  • 馃枑 I am!  It鈥檚 my number 1 gripe about YNAB 4 (still using it) too.

But me and dakinemaui just went back and forth on it recently here:

So I won鈥檛 go into it all again, except maybe to say it just seems like common sense to order them by entry time to me.

  • I don't understand. Why does it matter in which order you entered them? I either enter my charges when I check my bank/credit card accounts (usually daily) in which case I just clear them as I enter them so it doesn't matter what order they appear in my register. Or I enter a small stack of receipts my family members have given me (some probably for several days past, in which case they have already been entered and are only helpful because I now have a way to correctly categorize the charges I've already entered). Those would then just appear randomly regardless of when they had actually taken place.

    • Periwinkle Flute If you have like 2 or 3 transaction in a day, you wouldn't really care. But if you have 20 or transactions in a day, complete with inflow and outflows, you'll really get confused especially if you make it a habit to double check your transactions entered for any error as you enter them.

But I'm a bookkeeper for a preschool and when I reconcile their accounts I might have 150 transactions or more to reconcile between their bank account and QuickBooks each month in all kinds of wacky orders, so I guess I'm just used to it...

    • Periwinkle Flute have you tried doing that on your mobile phone?

    • dakinemaui double check whether it was already entered (sometimes due to multi tasking you might double record a transaction) or it was recorded to the correct category (remember, a payee may belong to multiple categories depending on each transaction) after entering the transaction.

    • Jorelle Tuvillo Just wanted to make sure you know that you can search transactions on the mobile app by clicking the search icon in the upper right when you're looking at an account register (including the All Accounts view). I know this isn't the same as what you're asking for, but it's a really quick way to surface a transaction if you know the amount or payee.

    • Matthew I know that, but yeah, that's not what I need for this issue.

    • Jorelle Tuvillo No, I do all budgeting "work" on the PC. Very occasionally I will use the mobile app to look something up if I absolutely have to, but generally I don't like using it...

    • Jorelle Tuvillo Have you tried finding the transaction by looking at the amount (since the last is sorted by that value already)?  I know when I reconcile it's well under a second to find something like that.

      Hope it helps!

  • I also wish transactions could be manually reordered, because I want the running balance on my checking account and on YNAB to match up for easier reconciliation.

    • Meg R.  This thread isn't monitored by developers. You'll need to make a Feature Request if you want to be heard.

In case it helps, I just clear it and move on down the bank's list. The additional actions to manually move transactions would only slow me down.

dakinemaui Yes, I know that.  I wasn't commenting because I wanted to make a request to the developers.  It's more of a slight annoyance (to me, personally) than something that warrants a feature request.  I have the "running balance" toggled off in YNAB because it doesn't match up with the running balance in my checking account, so I don't even really think about it anymore.  It's just something I noticed the first couple of times I went in to reconcile.  I don't have a lot of transactions anyway, so it's pretty easy and quick to clear them and move on.

Meg R. Are you aware you can sort the running balance in different ways? Just making sure. The Balance sort is probably closest to your bank. Or you could try the Date sort.

Superbone   I did not know that! I have been using YNAB since February and completely missed that feature.
