Where do the numbers in the available columns for credit cards come from?

This is for a credit card with a balance that isn't paid off every month.

In May we paid 2000.00 and that is the amount budgeted (first column.) We spent 2626.41 and the activity is 626.41. I understand where that number comes from.

The available column has 2626.41 and no other payments were made in May.

In June we paid 3750.00 and so that's the amount budgeted. Activity is -3643.00 with 107 in spending (as of 6/7). The amount in the available column is 2733.41. Where is this coming from?

Please help.

  • Activity is increased by budgeted spending and decreased by your payment. Available is what you had left over from last month plus what was automatically reserved for budgeted purchases (i.e., Activity) plus what you've budgeted for ADDITIONAL debt reduction -- over and above that for budgeted purchases.

If you are incurring interest, you should be sending the CC every penny in the Available column.

dakinemaui so I should only manually add something to the budgeted column for credit cards if I'm paying down on debt as compared to paying off what we spent in the same month? I manually added the 2000 I mentioned above.

Janna If you are paying off, then the Available balance in the payment category should be exactly enough to cover the entire account balance in YNAB.

If you have too much in the category it's because you budgeted for a payment that was already covered by budgeted spending.

Janna I think the best rule to remember -- for ANY category, in fact -- is that if you want to pay more than the Available amount, you need to budget to raise that Available amount.

And yes, in the case of the CC Payment category, you budget to allow you to pay down old debt.
