Robinhood

Does anyone have an automated solution for pulling in accurate data from Robinhood as a tracking account? Right now I manually update the total which isn't great.

  • I took a quick look at RobinHood's help page, but it doesn't look like they have a way to export data -- you may want to contact them and ask about it. You'd need a .QFX, .QIF, .OFX, or .CSV file to use File-Based Import in YNAB.

As you may know, we love to keep it simple, which is why we recommend doing exactly what you're doing -- updating the balance of your account (a quick reconcile is great for that). Because those frequent fluctuations in the market don't affect your budget, tracking them closely doesn't result in a huge budgeting win.

In my own budget, for example, I update each of those account balances about once a month, usually when I sit down to budget next month. Then I can view a new Net Worth Report.

I'm also curious to hear if we have other YNABers using Robinhood. 😀

Jen  I would love this feature. Having to track manually is not fun.

    • Hi Salmon Wildebeest Hot Pink Wildebeest and Sea Green Storm !

When you all have a moment, would you mind suggesting Robinhood in the app, if you haven’t already?

This information goes to our Direct Import partner so they know which banks are in high demand (a plus for you and them)! We can't guarantee if/when a bank might be added, but this at least puts it on the list of possibilities! :)

  • Should I be using the tracking accounts for Robinhood?  I started my ynab before I had a robinhood account, now that I have a robinhood account, I transferred a lot of money into it, but it inflates my expenses for the month because it's considered spent money (Which I understand that it is technically spent money). However when I look at reports I want to see money that was spent and not investments. It helps me see where I'm spending a lot of money and how I can cut some of it down.  Is this something you'd recommend or would you recommend leaving it as a tracking account and letting it grossly inflate my monthly expense for this specific category.

    Thanks!

Powder Blue Falcon When viewing reports you can exclude the category that you use for transferring money to Robin Hood This works as long as you are using dedicated categories specifically used for money you intend to transfer to investments. That's what I do for my IRA and taxable account investments ("His IRA", Her IRA", "Taxable Investing").

  • I’ve been using Robinhood for a number of years. I have it as a tracking account but as with all my investment accounts, I don’t use direct import. Instead, I just make a market adjustment at the end of each month.

Superbone Same here. I click Reconcile Account, type in the current value of my portfolio and I'm done. This creates a simple, high-level record of my Robinhood portfolio value over time. (I don't see a benefit in having any more info.)

One Eared Daniel I may have to try that update method. My method has been to right-click on the account and change Today's Balance.

  • The only financial app I found that supports Robinhood that I found so far is Personal Capital, but it doesn't do budgeting the YNAB way (it's more for long term retirement planning), not sure what secret they have that Mint and YNAB don't (I thought all use yodlee)

    • Hi Cadet Blue Saxophone !

We actually use Finicity, MX and Quovo as Direct Import partners. However, support for investment accounts is sparse across the board. You can suggest Robinhood in the app to let them know you'd really like to see that institution! :)

  • So I just signed up for YNAB trial, and I wanted to have Robinhood auto-imported. I found this thread and maybe  this manual updates will work for people while Robinhood stays investment only, but they will soon roll out Cash / Checking like account where I'll certainly will keep certain cash given their promised interest rates.  How is YNAB coming along with planning for future support Robinhood, as with that feature it will become more than an investment only app and a primary cash account for many people?

    • Welcome to You Need A Budget, Gold Sloth ! When Robinhood rolls out the new account types, our import partner will be able to evaluate and see if an integration can be built. If you have a moment, you can suggest it in the app, to let our partner know you'd like to see that option!

  • I would love a Robinhood auto-import. New account but I have been using YNAB for over a year and that is one of few improvements I would like.

      thx

    • Lavender Viper Thank you! If you try to add a new connection and type in "Robinhood" there won't be a Robinhood option. Instead, at the bottom of the entry screen, there will be an option to "Suggest an Institution".
